Overview

Dr Morgan's interests are in the application of surface sensitive techniques to study the fundamental surface processes which underpin phenomena such as catalysis, corrosion and adhesion.

His research areas are broad, encompassing aspects such as the elemental composition, chemistry and topography of surfacese. Using a combination of surface sensitive analytical techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Photo Induced Force Microscopy (PiFM), his research has a wide applicability as evidenced by our collaborations with other schools, including pharmacy, physics, engineering, biosciences, archaeology and earth sciences.

Currently Dr Morgan also serves as the technical manager of HarwellXPS, the EPSRC National Facility for X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy.

Research

Both my PhD and post-doctoral work focused on the characterisation and reactivity of model and nanoparticulate precious metal catalysis and their utilisation in industrial relevant processes. Research areas include:

  • Chemistry and characterisation of carbon materials
  • Direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide
  • Selective oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde using iron molybdate catalysts
  • Acetylene hydrochlorination.

Main research interests are in surface and nanoparticle characterisation, especially by X-ray based in-situ and operando measurements.
