Teacher in Japanese

Overview

I have been a teacher of Japanese on the Languages for All programme since 2015, and have assisted with MA Translation and Japanese Year Abroad modules as well.

I have a BA (Hons) in Pacific and Asian Studies (Japanese and Linguistics major) from the University of Victoria (Canada), and an MA in Applied Japanese LInguistics with Distinction from SOAS (London).  As part of my undergraduate studies I completed a year abroad at Doshisha University in Kyoto.  I have also spent many years working in Japan, both in Sendai in northern Honshu, and Okayama in the Chuugoku region of western Honshu.

My interests include phonetics and phonology, regional dialects, keigo, and the use of joshi (particles) and their implications in language teaching. My Masters disseratation focussed on the latter, investigating the use of the -wo particle with so-called Head Internal Relative Clauses and the -tokoro relative clause.

I am able to advise on studying and working in Japan as a foreign national, and on applying for the JET Programme.
