Research
I joined JOMEC to work with Máire Messenger Davies on a Broadcasting Standards Commission (now OFCOM) project that considered the use of children in non-fiction television programmes (http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/archive/bsc/pdfs/research/cchildren.pdf). Together we designed and launched JOMEC's first quantitative research methods course (Practical Research Methods for Media and Cultural Studies (edinburghuniversitypress.com) and later I designed and still teach a quantitative and qualitative research methods course to students on the MA International Public Relations (now MA International Public Relations & Global Communications Management).
I have worked on a variety of research projects within the School, including the representation of asylum seekers and refugees in the UK media (refugees-what-s-the-story-.pdf (article19.org); the relationship between journalism and public relations (http://www.mediawise.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Quality-Independence-of-British-Journalism.pdf); and military-media operations in the 2003 Iraq war (Shoot First and Ask Questions Later (peterlang.com)). I have also worked as a freelance audience researcher for broadcasters and production companies as well as other non-media organisations. Since 2006 I have worked with the International News Safety Institute to continue the monitoring of journalists' deaths around the world (https://newssafety.org/research-projects/killing-the-messenger/).
