Dr Zarabeth Newton
(she/her)
BSc, MSc, PhD, SFHEA
Year 1 Director of MB BCh, Senior Lecturer
Overview
I am the Year 1 Director of the MB BCh programme and the Facilitator Director for their Case Based Learning programme in the first 2 years of the course. My aim is to empower student to be curious and adaptable by providing opportunities to practice and be creative. I have a particular passion for breaking down barriers to improve inclusivity and to provide an open and transparent culture for both staff and students.
Previously, I was the Phase I Case Based Learning (CBL) Lead of the Medical MB BCh course at the School of Medicine (2014-2020). During this time, I focused my attention from working with the individual case experts and leads who coordinate and develop the 17 cases delivered through first two years of the curriculum, to support the innovative and important role of the facilitative tutor across the five-year curriculum. To support this, I continue recruit and provide development opportunities for our faculty of facilitators that support the CBL curriculum design.
I am passionate about developing the student agenda in Cardiff's Medical Education programme. I am always eager to work with students on their Student Selected Component projects.
I received my PhD as part of the Arthritis Research Group in the Division of Infection and Immunity at Cardiff University's School of Medicine.

Biography
As Case Based Learning Facilitation Director, I am striving to support our amazing faculty in their role as a facilitative tutor. This is an innovative role that is fundamental to CBL and student development. I am passionate about providing bespoke training for academics embarking on the new pedagogy surrounding CBL facilitation. This type of tutoring is often unfamiliar but is so rewarding to academics and beneficial to students.
I am also the Case Lead for the Musculoskeletal, Immunology and Haematology CBL Case.
Between 2014-2019, I was the Case Based Learning (CBL) Lead for the first 2 years of the MB BCh programme at Cardiff University As such, I have worked with helped other institutes in their transition to a CBL modelled curriculum.
During my time in the Centre for Medical Education, I have also been the Lead for the Student Selected Components (SSCs) in Year 1 of the course as well as the SSC Deputy Director. I found these roles highly fulfilling and I continue to contribute projects and supervision to the different activities that the SSCs offer throughout the 5 years of the MB BCh programme.
Prior to my time in Medical Education, I was a researcher in the Arthritis Research Group in the Division of Infection and Immunity. With a prevalent family history of Rheumatoid arthritis, I am passionate about understanding the condition in more depth in the hope of providing new ways to treat and manage the conditions progression. My PhD focussed on a TNFa Receptor family member, Death Receptor 3, and how it contribute to Rheumatoid Arthritis disease progression.
