Overview

Working with Cardiff University Otter Project, my research focuses on chemical pollution of our freshwaters.

The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is an effective sentinel for chemical pollution present in the freshwater environment. Their predominately piscivorous diet and non-migratory nature means the contaminant concentrations integrated in the otter’s tissues during its lifetime are reflective of the relative levels present in the environment where they lived. By using the archive of samples collected by the Otter Project we are able to compare contaminant levels between different areas and across years.

I apply a multivariate statistical approach to large datasets of biotic, environmental and contaminant concentration data in order to examine spatial and temporal variation in chemical pollution. This allows us to determine drivers of contamination and assess the success of mitigation measures and policy. Specifically, my research areas include per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and metals.

My background as a secondary school teacher means I have a keen interest in science communication and public engagement. I aim to bridge the gap between research and the knowledge of the public and policy makers.

Biography

After completing my undergraduate degree in zoology at Cardiff University in 2009, I went on to teacher training, gaining my Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in secondary science from Canterbury Christ Church University in 2011.

I subsequently worked as a teacher at two secondary schools in Kent, teaching science at GCSE and A level. I also had roles as acting Head of Department, Key Stages 3 and 5 Coordinator, Year 7 Activity Week Coordinator, Literacy and Independent Learning Leader and a Curriculum Mentor to PGCE students. I also completed the Middle Leadership Development Programme from the National College for Teaching and Leadership in 2013.

In January 2019 I joined Cardiff University Otter Project and began my PhD. My research focused on using Eurasian otters (Lutra lutra) as sentinels for the presence of chemical pollution in the environment. Using the otters to compare spatial and temporal variation in contamination levels.
