Research

I use marine diatoms to investigate ocean history on seasonal to millennial timescales.  In the high latitudes, ocean surface diatom assemblages are sensitive to changes in their environment and I exploit this sensitivity to reconstruct past changes in, for example, the concentration or duration of sea ice.

I use the oxygen isotopes preserved in the biogenic silica cell wall of the marine diatoms as a proxy for glacial discharge (volume of meltwater and glacial ice entering the coastal ocean form the land).  I am also interested in the variations in diatom species morphology in response to environmental change.

Teaching

Broadly, I teach life and Earth history and ocean & climate change.  I have developed and lead field trips for geoscientists, in the UK and internationally.  In 2023 I was recognised as a Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy.
