Matina Trachana

Dr Matina Trachana

Teaching Fellow

Overview

I am currently a Teaching Fellow in Mathematics at Cardiff School of Mathematics. I teach a range of classes at both undergraduate and master's levels, while also supervising MSc students' dissertations.

Research

My research interests include multidimentional moment problems. Prior to my role at Cardiff, I conducted PhD research on matrix-valued moment problems at Newcastle University.

Details at: Kimsey, D.P., Trachana, M. On a Solution of the Multidimensional Truncated Matrix-Valued Moment Problem. Milan J. Math. 90, 17–101 (2022).

Selected research trips and talks:

  • I undertook a three-week research visit to the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Cagliari, Italy, where I collaborated with Dr M. Infusino. The visit was supported by funding awarded through the Taith Research Mobility Grant, which supports collaborative research initiatives for researchers based in Wales, with additional support from Cardiff School of Mathematics.
  • In May 2023, I participated at the Joint Spectra and related Topics in Complex Dynamics and Representation Theory workshop at the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS), Banff, Canada.
  • I gave a talk titled "On a Solution of the Multidimensional Truncated Matrix-Valued Moment Problem" during the Truncated Moment Problems Special Session at the International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications (IWOTA) in Krakow, Poland, in September 2022.
  • For my participation in the Joint Mathematics Meetings 2022, US, and presentation of "A Solution of the Truncated Multidimensional Matrix-Valued Moment Problem", I was awarded an LMS Travel Grant for Early Career Researchers.

Teaching

I teach a variety of modules within the School of Mathematics and hold the status of Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).

Currently, I am the module leader for Algebra II: Rings (MA3014). In Spring 2023/24, I led the Ordinary Differential Equations (MA3012) module and have been involved in a range of other modules, including delivering lectures for Linear Algebra II, conducting computer-based classes in R for Foundations of Statistics and Data Science (MAT022), and supporting workshops for Foundations of Mathematics II (MA1006). Additionally, I supervise MSc dissertation students. I was happy to be nominated for the Most Engaging Staff Member award at the ESLAs in 2022.
