Overview
I lecture in communications and journalism practice, with a particular interest in environmental and social justice campaigns.
I joined the School of Journalism, Media and Culture in 2002 when I introduced and taught on the first digital journalism courses. I now teach mostly communications and public relations, having launched and led the BA and MA module Communicating Causes and have recently developed a new MA module Purpose-led Communications.
During this time I've also worked in communications for the environmental campaigning organisation Friends of the Earth, provided consultancy and training for clients such as WWF, the National Union of Journalists, UNISON, UpRising and the Wildlife Trusts, and freelanced as a travel journalist and web designer.
Before Cardiff University I was a print production journalist, web designer and online editor, working for (among many others) The Financial Times, The Sunday Times, Casio, Kodak, Thomson Holidays, Readers Digest, Intel, Voluntary Service Overseas and Chelsea College of Art.
Teaching
I've proposed, designed, led and lectured on practice-based modules in cause and digital communications, public relations, multimedia and magazine journalism. I've supervised MA students completing academic research dissertations on campaigning, purpose-led communications and digital activism, and practice-based dissertations on environmental and social justice journalism.
