Martin Coyle is General Editor of the New Casebooks Series and the Critical Issues Series. He is currently working on books on Medieval Literature and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, having recently completed, with John Peck, the second edition A Brief History of English Literature

On MA in English Literature he teaches courses on Violent Death in Renaissance Drama and Constructing Shakespeare, both concerned with the production of cultural meanings and the transitions between periods of literary history.

Postgraduate students

Applications from potential PhD students in any area of the Renaissance will be welcome, but particularly in the fields of Shakespeare, Renaissance Drama, textual editing and the textual histories of Shakespeare's plays as well as the other aspects of Shakespeare, including film.

Current supervisions for PhD include:

  • Creative Writing 
  • Shakespeare's history plays
  • Shakespeare as collaborator
  • Shakespeare and metadrama
  • Shakespeare and school Shakespeare

Recent successful projects include a thesis on Spenser's Faerie Queen and Shakespeare's clown.

Research interests

Textual editing and the textual histories of Shakespeare's plays as well as the other aspects of Shakespeare, including: 

  • film
  • medieval drama
  • Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
  • Hamlet
