Dechreuodd Peter Garrett weithio yn y Ganolfan Ymchwil Iaith a Chyfathrebu (Ysgol Saesneg, Cyfathrebu ac Athroniaeth) ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd ym 1994. Cyn hynny, bu'n gweithio ym Mhrifysgol Bangor.
Mae prif ffocws ei ymchwil wedi bod mewn agweddau a newid agweddau mewn iaith a chyfathrebu, ac mewn ymwybyddiaeth ieithyddol. Mae'r rhain wedi bod yn brif llinyn ei ymchwil a'i gyhoeddiadau mewn sawl maes: e.e. amlieithrwydd, ieithoedd lleiafrifol ac adfywio iaith, amrywiad iaith, ieithoedd safonol ac ideoleg iaith safonol, cyfathrebu ar draws y bywyd, globaleiddio, diaspora, rhyngwladoli mewn addysg. Mae ei addysgu a'i oruchwylio wedi tynnu ar ei ymchwil a'i gyd-destun ymchwil ehangach (e.e. addysgu a goruchwylio mewn sosioieithyddiaeth, cyfathrebu cyfryngau, cyfathrebu perswadiol, cyfathrebu mewn perthnasoedd, agweddau iaith, dulliau ymchwil cyfathrebu).
Mae wedi cyd-gyfarwyddo nifer o brosiectau ymchwil a ariennir ar yr iaith Gymraeg, gan archwilio agweddau a chanfyddiadau o fewn a thu allan i Gymru, a chyda chydweithwyr yng Nghatalwnia a Chymuned Ymreolaethol y Basg yn Sbaen, gan gymharu effaith rhyngwladoli mewn addysg uwch ar y Gymraeg, y Basgeg a'r Gymraeg.
Ym maes ymwybyddiaeth iaith, cyd-drefnodd Seminar BAAL arloesol ar Ymwybyddiaeth Iaith ym 1989, a arweiniodd at y llyfr arloesol Language Awareness in the Classroom (Longman 1992, cyd-olygu gyda Carl James). Cyd-drefnodd hefyd y Gynhadledd Ryngwladol gyntaf ar Ymwybyddiaeth Iaith ym 1992, ac roedd yn un o sylfaenwyr ac ysgrifennydd y Gymdeithas Ymwybyddiaeth Iaith, a sefydlwyd yn y gynhadledd honno. Bu'n Olygydd y cyfnodolyn Language Awareness rhwng 1993 a 2008, a chynhyrchodd The Routledge Handbook of Language Awareness (Routledge 2018, cyd-olygu gyda Josep M. Cots). Fe'i gwnaed yn Aelod Anrhydeddus o'r Gymdeithas Ymwybyddiaeth Iaith yn 2022.
Ar hyn o bryd (Medi 2026), mae'n cyd-olygu'r2il argraffiad o The Routledge Handbook of Language Awareness, sy'n ddiweddariad ac yn estyniad o'r argraffiad cyntaf a gyhoeddwyd yn 2018. Mae disgwyl iddo ymddangos yn gynnar yn 2027.

Rwy'n ymchwilio i sosioieithyddiaeth a seicoleg gymdeithasol iaith. Mae gen i ddiddordeb arbennig ym meysydd gwerthuso ac agwedd iaith a chyfathrebu. Mae'r rhain yn cynnwys agweddau at iaith; cyfathrebu perswadiol a newid agweddau; a chanfyddiadau, gwerthusiadau ac agweddau mewn cyfathrebu rhwng cenedlaethau ar draws y cyfnod oes.
Rwyf wedi cyd-gyfarwyddo prosiect a ariennir gan yr ESRC sy'n ymchwilio i effeithiau agwedd a pherfformiad defnydd mamiaith mewn addysg ddwyieithog, ac rwyf hefyd wedi cyd-gyfarwyddo prosiect ymchwil a ariennir gan Brifysgol Cymru ar agweddau iaith yng Nghymru.
Ar brosiect Iaith a Chyfathrebu Byd-eang a ariennir gan Leverhulme yn CLCR, roedd fy ymchwil yn cynnwys gwaith ar agweddau byd-eang tuag at Saesneg, a chymharu canfyddiadau'r cyhoedd o globaleiddio mewn gwahanol rannau o'r byd. Roedd hefyd yn cynnwys ymchwil yn llinyn 'Cymru, Iaith a Globaleiddio' y prosiect.
Yn y cyfnod 2009-2012, roeddwn yn cynnal ymchwil gydweithredol gyda chydweithwyr yn Sbaen (yr Athro Josep M. Cots, Prifysgol Lleida, a'r Athro David Lasagabaster, Prifysgol Gwlad y Basg). Roedd hwn yn brosiect a ariannwyd gan Weinyddiaeth Gwyddoniaeth ac Arloesi Sbaen, o'r enw: Rhyngwladoli ac amlieithrwydd mewn prifysgolion mewn cyd-destunau dwyieithog: Catalwnia, Gwlad y Basg, a Chymru.
Ers hynny, rwyf wedi bod yn ymchwilio gyda chydweithwyr yn yr Universitat de Lleida ac Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya ar brosiect dilynol a ariennir gan Weinyddiaeth yr Economi a Chystadleurwydd Sbaen, o'r enw Interculturality, European citizenship and English as a Lingua Franca: between policies and practices in the international mobility programmes of universities.
Rwyf hefyd yn cymryd rhan yn SLICE (Standard Language in Contemporary Europe). Dechreuais weithio yn y Ganolfan Ymchwil Iaith a Chyfathrebu (CLCR) ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd yn 1994. Cyn hynny, roeddwn yn ddarlithydd yn yr Adran Ieithyddiaeth ym Mhrifysgol Bangor.
Roeddwn yn gyd-sylfaenydd yn 1992 o'r Association for Language Awareness, a'i chyfnodolyn Language Awareness, a gyhoeddir bellach gan Taylor a Francis. Roeddwn yn Olygydd y cyfnodolyn Language Awareness rhwng 1993 a 2008. Rwyf wedi cyhoeddi llawer o erthyglau ym maes Ymwybyddiaeth Iaith.
