Ymchwil
Ystadau'r Knights Templars yng Nghymru a Lloegr ar ddechrau'r bedwaredd ganrif ar ddeg
Mae'r prosiect hwn yn dilyn fy nghyhoeddiad o'r Proceedings against the Templars in the British Isles (Ashgate, 2011), a chyhoeddi a chyfieithu'r achos prawf yn erbyn y Templars ym Mhrydain ac Iwerddon.
Cafodd stadau'r Templars yng Nghymru a Lloegr eu dyfeisio ar adeg arestiadau'r Templars yn gynnar ym mis Ionawr 1308. O'r amser hwnnw hyd ddiddymu'r Gorchymyn ym Mhrydain ym mis Gorffennaf 1311, gweinyddwyd yr ystadau gan geidwaid brenhinol. Cymerwyd cofnodion llawn ac fe'u cedwir yn yr Archifau Gwladol (TNA). Prin fod y cofnodion hyn wedi cael eu hastudio gan ysgolheigion. Maent yn cynnig cyfle unigryw i astudio sut y manteisiodd sefydliad di-fonheddig ar ei eiddo tiriog a sut roedd yn gysylltiedig â'i gymuned leol, ar adeg pan oedd tirfeddianwyr Lloegr yn dechrau rhedeg eu hystadau'n anuniongyrchol, gan gyflogi beilïaid medrus, yn hytrach nag yn uniongyrchol.
Nod y prosiect hwn yw ateb nifer o gwestiynau, gan gynnwys:
- Pa eiddo oedd gan y Templars yng Nghymru a Lloegr ym mis Ionawr 1308? A yw'n bosibl sefydlu (e.e. drwy'r post Inquisitiones post-mortem neu'r Can Rolls) beth oedd gwerth yr eiddo hwn yn y blynyddoedd cynharach? A yw'n bosibl darganfod beth oedd yn werth yn y blynyddoedd i ddod (e.e. yn 1324, 1338, neu yn ddiweddarach Inquisitiones post Mortem)?
- Pwy wnaeth y Templars gyflogi ar eu stadau, ar ba dermau?
- Sut cafodd eu heiddo ei ecsbloetio/datblygu rhwng 1308-11, pan ddiddymwyd y Gorchymyn ym Mhrydain?
- Beth wnaethon nhw ei gynhyrchu (fel gwlân, cig eidion, seidr, pysgod, glo)?
- Beth oedd eu perthynas â chymunedau lleol?
- A oedd ffurf y dogfennau sy'n cofnodi'r wybodaeth hon yn amrywio o un ardal i'r nesaf? Oedd y dogfennau'n cael eu harchwilio?
Mae'r allbynnau hyd yn hyn yn cynnwys cyfres o erthyglau ar ystadau'r Templars ym Mhrydain a llyfr, Bywyd Bob Dydd y Templars (Fonthill, 2017)
Yr Ysbyty ym Mhrydain ac Iwerddon yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar ddeg ac ymlaen
Mae'r prosiect parhaus hwn yn ymchwilio i rôl Ysbyty Sant Ioan o Jerwsalem yng Nghymru, Lloegr, Iwerddon a'r Alban yn y 14eg ganrif ac ymlaen, ac agweddau tuag ato. Mae hyn yn adeiladu ar fy ymchwil flaenorol i agweddau tuag at y Gorchmynion Crefyddol Milwrol yn yr Oesoedd Canol, a'm hymchwil gyfredol i Urdd y Deml ar ddechrau'r bedwaredd ganrif ar ddeg. Mae llawer o ymchwil yn cael ei wneud ar Ysbyty Sant Ioan yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar ddeg, ond mae'r Gorchymyn ym Mhrydain ac Iwerddon wedi cael ei anwybyddu i raddau helaeth.
Mae'r cwestiynau'n cynnwys: sut effeithiodd achos llys a dinistr Urdd y Deml yn 1312 ar agweddau tuag at ei chwaer orchymyn, yr Ysbyty? Pa mor bell y gwnaeth yr Ysbyty ddisodli'r Deml yn ei swyddogaethau amrywiol, o'i rôl yng ngweinyddiaeth frenhinol i'w rolau yn y gymuned leol? Beth oedd cyflwr stadau'r Templars erbyn i'r Ysbyty allu eu caffael - pa mor bell oedd eu gwerth economaidd wedi gostwng? Pa mor bell oedd yr Ysbytywyr yn parhau â chysylltiadau'r Templars â'u noddwyr seciwlar, ac â'r Eglwys?
Prosiectau eraill
Rwy'n parhau i weithio ar agweddau ar brif ffynonellau'r Drydedd Groesgad, yn enwedig yr hyn a elwir yn Itinerarium Peregrinorum 1, ar lenyddiaeth 'ffuglennol' ganoloesol fel ffynhonnell ar gyfer diwylliant a chymdeithas Ewropeaidd ganoloesol, ac ar gyfranogiad menywod yn y Croesgadau a chyda'r Templars a'r Hospitallers.
