Mae gan yr Athro Alan Felstead raddau o Brifysgol Caergrawnt, Prifysgol Warwick a Choleg Imperial Prifysgol Llundain. Mae wedi dal swyddi yng Ngholeg Nuffield, Prifysgol Rhydychen a Phrifysgol Caerlŷr. Ers 2006 mae wedi bod yn Athro Ymchwil yn Ysgol y Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol, Prifysgol Caerdydd. Mae hefyd wedi bod yn Gyd-gyfarwyddwr Sefydliad Ymchwil a Data Cymdeithasol ac Economaidd Cymru (WISERD) ers 2022.  Mae ei ymchwil yn canolbwyntio ar: ansawdd y gwaith; hyfforddi, sgiliau a dysgu; cyflogaeth ansafonol; a'r mannau gwaith a'r lleoedd. Mae'r Athro Felstead wedi cwblhau nifer o brosiectau ymchwil wedi'u hariannu (gan gynnwys 18 wedi'u hariannu gan y Cyngor Ymchwil Economaidd a Chymdeithasol), wedi cynhyrchu wyth llyfr, ac wedi ysgrifennu dros 250 o erthyglau cyfnodolion, penodau llyfrau, adroddiadau ymchwil a phapurau trafod. Mae wedi cynhyrchu dros £12.2 miliwn o gyllid ymchwil gan yr ESRC, adrannau llywodraeth y DU, gweinyddiaethau datganoledig, yr Undeb Ewropeaidd a'r Ganolfan Ewropeaidd ar gyfer Datblygu Hyfforddiant Galwedigaethol (CEDEFOP). Mae wedi cyflwyno llawer o brif anerchiadau i gynadleddau ledled y byd, gan gynnwys Tsieina, Singapore, De Affrica, Awstralia ac Ewrop. Mae wedi rhoi tystiolaeth ysgrifenedig a llafar i ymchwiliadau ar faterion y farchnad lafur a gynhaliwyd, er enghraifft, gan Bwyllgor Dethol yr Adran Gwaith a Phensiynau, Tŷ'r Arglwyddi, Swyddfa'r Cabinet, Senedd yr Alban a Senedd Cymru/Welsh Parliament.  Cyhoeddwyd ei lyfr diweddaraf, Remote Working: A Research Overview , yn 2022 gan Routledge.  Yn ôl un adolygydd, mae'n 'rhaid darllen i unrhyw un sydd â diddordeb yn y ffordd y mae lleoliad gwaith newidiol yn effeithio ar ein bywydau', tra yn ôl un arall 'mae'r llyfr rhagorol hwn yn rhoi adroddiad hygyrch ond trylwyr sy'n seiliedig ar ymchwil o'r materion allweddol'. Mae ei lyfrau eraill hefyd wedi denu canmoliaeth. Cyhoeddwyd Unequal Britain at Work yn 2015 gan Oxford University Press.  Fe'i graddiwyd yn 'drawiadol am ei hamser, dyfnder a thrylwyredd', tra'n cynnig 'croeso' a dadansoddiad empirig 'cywrain ... berthnasol iawn i drafodaeth polisi'. Enillodd Improving Working as Learning, Llundain: Routledge, 2009, wobr y Gymdeithas Astudiaethau Addysgol a Argymhellir yn Fawr am lyfrau a gyhoeddwyd y flwyddyn honno. Mae wedi bod yn Athro Gwadd yn y Ganolfan Dysgu a Chyfleoedd Bywyd (LLAKES), Sefydliad Addysg UCL, Athro Ymweld ym Mhrifysgol Normal Beijing ac yn Gymrawd Ymchwil Ymweld yng Nghomisiwn y DU dros Gyflogaeth a Sgiliau. Fe'i penodwyd yn Gymrawd Academi'r Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol (FAcSS) yn 2011 ac yn Gymrawd Cymdeithas Ddysgedig Cymru (FLSW) yn 2013. Mae hefyd yn Uwch Aelod o Goleg Adolygu Cyfoed ESRC. Yn 2018-2019 eisteddodd ar Gomisiwn Gwaith Teg Llywodraeth Cymru fel Cynghorydd Arbenigol Annibynnol ac yn ystod 2019-2020 roedd ar secondiad rhan-amser i Lywodraeth Cymru.

Rwyf wedi goruchwylio nifer o draethodau hir israddedig a meistr yn ogystal â thraethodau ymchwil PhD. Rwyf hefyd wedi gweithredu fel arholwr allanol PhD ar sawl achlysur, yn y DU a thramor.  

Rwy'n awyddus i oruchwylio pynciau sy'n ymwneud â'r farchnad lafur, gan gynnwys lleoliad gwaith, mathau o gontract cyflogaeth a'r amrywiaeth o ffyrdd y mae gweithwyr yn dysgu yn y gwaith.

Addysgu

I convene a second year module on the world of work which combines academic study with experiential learning (SI0240). In addition, I give occasional lectures on other modules such as the first year social research methods module (SI0120). I also teach skills concepts, ways of understanding workforce development and research methods in context as part of a Masters in Skills and Workforce Development in Singapore (SIT903).

During my career, I have supervised and taught numerous students to completion of post-graduate dissertations and theses. I have also acted as PhD external examiner on many occasions, both in the UK and overseas. I am keen to supervise postgraduate students whose areas of interest are related to the labour market. Such topics include the location of work, types of employment contract and the variety of ways in which workers learn at work.

2013 SAGE Prize for Excellence Nominee for refereed journal article entitled 'Job preferences and the intrinsic quality of work: the changing attitudes to work of British employees 1992-2006', Work, Employment and Society, 26(5): 806-821.

2010 Society of Educational Studies Award for Improving Working as Learning book. It was judged to be of 'fundamental importance' to the study, understanding and conceptualization of workplace learning and was 'highly recommended' for books published in 2009.

2005 Emerald Citation of Excellence Award for refereed journal article entitled 'For better or worse? Non-standard jobs and high involvement work systems', International Journal of Human Resource Management, 15(7): 1293-1316. The award placed it in the top 50 out of 15,000 published articles assessed over the previous year.

Aelodaethau proffesiynol

  • I am a regular referee for funding bids to organizations such as the ESRC, Nuffield Foundation, Leverhulme Trust and British Academy. I also frequently carry out reviews of book proposals sent to leading international publishers such as Oxford University Press, Palgrave Macmillan and Routledge.
  • I regularly referee papers for top-ranking journals in the field of employment studies. To date, I have refereed papers for 42 different journals in the field.
  • I have given labour market advice to a range of policy-makers, including the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, HM Treasury, the Department for Transport, the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP), the Japanese Institute of Labour, Welsh Assembly Government, Scottish Government  and a number of Regional Development Agencies.
  • I have also acted as a consultant to the Work Foundation, Samsung and employer-led bodies such as the Sector Skill Councils and the Alliance of Sector Skills Councils.
