Dr Mike Berry is a Lecturer at Cardiff University School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.

After completing his Bsc at Bath Mike spent two years working as a researcher at the University of California Santa Barbara on a major research project funded by the American cable television industry. He then completed a PhD at the University of Glasgow where he worked with members of the Glasgow Media Group.

Following that he was employed as a researcher on an ESRC project examining the framing of security threats in Russia, the United States and Britain before taking up a lectureship in late 2006 at the University of Nottingham. Recently he has been working on projects funded by the NSPCC and London Inclusion.

Mike Berry’s research interests are focused around the question of how the mass media affects public knowledge and understanding .

His research is especially concerned with examining the social, political, economic and cultural contexts in which messages are produced and received.

His recent publications include More Bad News from Israel (Pluto, 2011), and Terrorism, Elections and Democracy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010). He is currently completing research looking at media coverage and public understanding of the financial crisis.

I am also currently supervising dissertation students at the BA, MA and doctoral level.

After completing my Bsc in Sociology and Psychology at Bath University I spent two years working as a researcher at the University of California Santa Barbara on a major research project funded by the American cable television industry. I then completed a PhD at the University of Glasgow where I worked with members of the Glasgow Media Group and co-authored my first book 'Bad News from Israel' (Pluto Press)

Following completion of my PhD I was employed as a researcher on an ESRC 'New Security Challnges' project examining the framing of security threats in Russia, the United States and Britain  - out of which came my second co-authored book 'Terrorism, Elections and Democracy' (Palgrave- Macmillan).

In the autumn of 2006 I took up a lectureship at the University of Nottingham where I was a founding member of the Department of International Media and Communication. Whilst at Nottingham  I was involved in establishing the degree programme and setting up the extensive student exchange with Nottingham’s campus in Ningbo, China. I taught at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in my department and convened a module for the business school. 

Since 2012 I have been a member of academic staff at JOMEC. During this period I have continued to be an active researcher leading projects for funders including the UNHCR and the TUC. I publish in leading journals including Sociology, Journalism, Media, Culture and Journalism Studies. I currently taech at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Level as well as supervising PhD students. I am currently the Erasmus Officer for the School. Previously I have been Director of the MA in Political Communication and Chair of Undergraduate Admissions.

  • The reception of broadcast and digital news.
