Ymchwil
I am interested in deformation processes in the Earth at all scales, especially in the upper crust, and their relation to the formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits.
Fracturing, fluid flow, and brecciation are critical in these environments. I am also interested in the relationship between tectonics and surface processes in rifts and continental interiors. In many of these topics, techniques based on fractal geometry are important tools.
Addysgu
Rwy'n addysgu daeareg strwythurol ar lefelau ail, y drydedd a'r bedwaredd flwyddyn. Gwaith maes ac addysgu yn y maes yw'r ffordd orau o addysgu'r pwnc hwn, fel y dangosir gan adborth gan genedlaethau o fyfyrwyr. Mae fy nosbarthiadau yn mynd i arfordir de Cymru, i Arran ac i Ogledd Sbaen.
Mae potensial dronau i ddarparu safbwyntiau rhagorol yn y maes yn amlwg, yn ogystal â chreu llawer o ddiddordeb o safbwynt addysgu.
Mae strwythurau mesur mewn craidd dril yn sgil hanfodol yn y diwydiant archwilio: rwy'n datblygu rhai deunyddiau addysgu ar gyfer y sgil hon.

Effeithiau Economaidd mewn Archwilio a Mwyngloddio Mwynau
Mae fy ressearch mewn mineralization hydrothermol yn berthnasol iawn i'r diwydiant archwilio a mwyngloddio. Gellir cyfeirio archwilio yn fwy effeithlon, ac mae adnoddau'n cael eu hamcangyfrif yn fwy cywir, trwy ddeall rheolaethau strwythurol ar fwyngloddio. Mae rhaglenni explration mwy effeithlon hefyd o fudd i'r amgylchedd.
Cynhaliwyd yr ymchwil yn Awstralia, Brasil, Papua Gini Newydd, Rwsia, Gorllewin Affrica, a de Affrica, yn bennaf trwy ymgynghoriaethau i gwmnïau mwyngloddio gan gynnwys Anglogold Ashanti, Glencore, Highlands Paciifc, Kinross, Newmont Asia Pacific, Rio Tinto, Ozminerals, a Zimplats. Mae'r rhan fwyaf o'r gwaith hwn yn ymwneud â dyddodion aur a chopr hydrothermol, gan gynnwys aur lode, epithermal, mathau blaendal VHMS. Anglogold Ashanti, Kinross a Newmont yn dri o'r deg cwmni mwyngloddio aur gorau yn y byd.
Mae archwilio'n dibynnu'n helaeth mewn craidd dril diemwnt. Rwyf wedi bod yn datblygu systemau unedig ar gyfer dadansoddi craidd dril sy'n canolbwyntio, gan roi sylw arbennig i nodweddion llinol fel colfachau plygu a llinellau slicenlines sy'n hanfodol ond a anwybyddir yn gyffredin. Mae'r dulliau hyn yn cael eu hamlinellu mewn cwpl o bapurau a'u gweithredu mewn taenlen ar gyfer cyfrifo tueddiadau strwythurol o nodweddion planar a llinol o fesuriadau craidd.

Effeithiau Ymarfer Proffesiwn - Hyfforddiant
Mae cyrsiau addysgu ar ddaeareg strwythurol ar gyfer archwilio a mwyngloddio wedi bod yn rhan nodweddiadol o'r perthnasoedd hyn yn y diwydiant. Mae daeareg strwythurol yn ddisgyblaeth sy'n datblygu'n gyflym, ac mae gan lawer o'r syniadau diweddaraf oblygiadau pwysig i'w harchwilio, sydd wedi'u hymgorffori yn y cyrsiau hyn. Mae cydrannau ymarferol a maes yn rhannau hanfodol o'r cyrsiau.
Ym mis Mawrth 2020, bydd MOOC newydd gan Brifysgol Caerdydd "Daeareg Strwythurol ar gyfer Archwilio a Mwyngloddio" yn mynd â rhai o'r syniadau hyn i gynulleidfa ehangach.
Mae camau olaf gwerslyfr yn cael eu paratoi, a fydd yn edrych o'r newydd ar ddaeareg strwythurol ar lefel ganolradd i israddedig/ôl-raddedig uwch, gyda cotiau Steve Wojtal adnd Basil Tikoff.
