Ymchwil
What? Awdurdod a phŵer; theori feirniadol; athroniaeth ddyfalu a materolaidd; gofodau a gwleidyddiaeth estheteg; rhyw a hil yn y De Byd-eang (yn enwedig Brasil); damcaniaethau nad ydynt yn gynrychiolaethol; ymchwil gyfranogol; dinasoedd a moderniaeth; ymylon trefol.
Ble? Rio de Janeiro; Bryste; Hong Kong; Caerdydd; Paris
Pwy? Theodor Adorno; Hannah Arendt; Walter Benjamin; Gilles Deleuze a Félix Guattari; Michel Foucault; Jean-Marie Guyau; Jacques Ranciere; Michel Serres; Oskar Negt ac Alexander Kluge.
Rwy'n ddaearyddwr dynol rhyngddisgyblaethol sy'n arbenigo mewn gofodrwydd pŵer, awdurdod a thrais, yn enwedig estheteg wleidyddol awdurdod. Mae fy ymchwil wedi cael ei ariannu gan AHRC, ESRC, Leverhulme, Cronfa Newton, a CCAUC. Ar hyn o bryd (2025-26) rydw i ar absenoldeb ymchwil fel Cymrawd Leverhulme.
Mae llawer o fy ngwaith wedi canolbwyntio ar geisio cysyniadoli sut y gallwn feddwl, honni ac ymateb i awdurdod yn wahanol ac yn greadigol. Mae awdurdod yn ffurf hynod bwysig o gydlynu cymdeithasol, un sydd wedi'i strwythuro trwy ganrifoedd o oruchafiaeth drefedigaethol, patriarchaidd ac anthropocentrig. Am y rheswm hwn, mae ailfeddwl awdurdod yn gofyn am ymgysylltu â ffyrdd o herio'r strwythurau, gwybodaeth, meddwl, a theimlad sy'n gysylltiedig â moderniaeth Ewropeaidd.
Roedd fy ymchwil cynnar yn mynd i'r afael â'r materion hyn o safbwynt diwylliannol, gan archwilio rôl diwylliant, perfformiad a llenyddiaeth trefol wrth herio ffyrdd dominyddol o feddwl am awdurdod yn 'dinas moderniaeth'. Cyhoeddais yr ymchwil hon yn fy monograff cyntaf The Life of the City: Space, Humour, and the Experience of Truth yn Fin-de-Siecle Montmartre (2014, Ashgate).
Yn dilyn hynny, rwyf wedi datblygu beirniadaeth ehangach o ffyrdd o feddwl am awdurdod, gan dynnu ar ddamcaniaethau ôl-ddyneiddiol, ffeministaidd, ac ôl-drefedigaethol i fynegi cyfrif dyfalu o 'awdurdod an-awdurdodol'. Mae awdurdod anawdurdodol yn fath o awdurdod sy'n lluosogi ein ffyrdd o beng yn y byd, ac yn ymdrechu i ddad-ddysgu'r adeiladwaith patriarchaidd a threfedigaethol o awdurdod sydd wedi ei gysylltu â ffigurau esthetig fel y Meistr, yr Arweinydd, y Tad, a'r Barnwr. Mae'r prosiect degawd hwn o hyd, sy'n cwmpasu ymchwil empirig yn Hong Kong, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, a Bryste, yn cael ei gyhoeddi fel monograff mynediad agored, Nonauthoritarian Authority: Cities, Materiality, and the Aesthetics of Power (2026, LSE Press).
Yn ganolog i ailddyfeisio awdurdod rhaid i ddemocrateiddio gwybodaeth trwy arferion cyfranogol sy'n ailddosbarthu awdurdod ac yn cydnabod doethineb y rhai sy'n siarad o sefyllfa ymylol neu ormes. Rwyf wedi bod yn datblygu'r syniadau hyn yn ymarferol trwy ymchwil gweithredu mewn cymuned o favelas yn Rio de Janeiro, gan ddefnyddio dulliau ymchwil ymgorfforedig wedi'u cyd-greu i ddeall bywyd bob dydd, awdurdod, a thrais. Arweiniodd yr ymchwil hon at fy nhrydydd monograff, llyfr cyd-awdur sy'n cael ei adolygu ar hyn o bryd, o'r enw dros dro Creative Body Politics Against the Anti-Black City.
Ar hyn o bryd rwy'n dechrau gweithio ar bedwerydd monograff, gyda theitl gwaith Awdurdod Anffurfiol yn Favelas Rio de Janeiro. Bydd hyn mewn fformat 'llyfr byw' ar-lein agored sy'n cwmpasu gwahanol fathau o ysgrifennu a chyfryngau ffurf hir a byr.
Hyfforddais yn wreiddiol mewn Athroniaeth ac rwy'n parhau i fod â diddordeb mawr mewn dadleuon athronyddol o fewn a thu hwnt i Ddaearyddiaeth. Rwy'n cyd-olygu'r Wiley-Blackwell Handbook of History and Philosophy of Geography, i'w gyhoeddi yn 2027. Yn athronyddol, mae gen i ddiddordeb arbennig mewn ymgysylltu â theori ddyfalu, materoliaeth newydd, theori ffeministaidd, ac adenydd mwy arbrofol Theori Beirniadol.
Mae fy ymchwil yn cael ei arwain gan theori ac felly empirig eithaf amrywiol, gan gynnwys pynciau fel seilwaith trefol, ecoleg wleidyddol echdynnu tywod ac adfer tir, gwleidyddiaeth trais gwladwriaethol mewn cymunedau anffurfiol, a diwylliannau trefol anarchaidd creadigol. Mae hyn yn cwmpasu gwaith hanesyddol, archifol ac astudiaethau cyfoes. Yn ddamcaniaethol, rwy'n ymgysylltu'n eang â daearyddiaeth nad yw'n gynrychioliadol ac yn dod â nhw i sgwrs â thraddodiadau damcaniaethol mwy gwleidyddol.
