Trosolwyg

I am a cultural geographer and social theorist. My research interests are oriented around the relationships between geography and aesthetics. This includes geographies of art and creative practice, but also the aesthetics of social forms, and the poetics of knowledge. In particular, I focus on the aesthetics of authority, and therefore (because authority is usually tied to claims upon the future), on experiences of futurity.

I am currently completing a monograph provisionally titled The Forms of Authority. The book explores the 'crisis of authority' - an experience of temporal disorientation and futurelessness - in modernity through a number of historical and contemporary case studies in Europe and the global south, from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro to the Opera House of Paris. It links the question of authority (an affective, ambiguous modality of power that draws its force from varying forms of transcendence) to the problem of form. In doing so, the book experiments with using alternative narrative and visual forms in order to construct distinct forms of geographical knowledge. The book focuses on the ways in which spaces and landscapes of authority generate (or fail to generate) meaningful relationships between past, present and future.

I have an interest in a broad range of contemporary theoretical debates, including new materialisms, affect theory, and post-humanist theory. I am also increasingly turning to the thought of figures within or loosely associated with the Frankfurt School, including Adorno, Kracauer, Simmel, Arendt, Negt and Kluge, and Benjamin, in order to understand the potential role of theory in catastrophic times.

Earlier research was published as a monograph titled The Life of the City: Space, Humour and the Experience of Truth in fin-de-siecle Montmartre (Ashgate, 2014). This book offers an historical geographical account of the politics of aesthetics in the artistic and political counter-cultures of late 19th century Paris. In particular, it explores the role of experimental writing and performance in contesting dominant biopolitical experiences of urban vitality and liveliness.

I also have an interest in experimental forms of participatory practice, and have published research on participatory arts and mental health, as well as leading a project on participatory practice and more-than-human agency.

I am part of a research collective called the Authority Research Network (ARN). Together we experiment with ways of collectively working and writing on issues around power, alienation, participatory practice, and the making of the commons. Our latest book is Space, Power and the Commons: The Promise of Alternative Futures (Routledge, 2015).

I am interested in supervising PhD students and establishing research collaborations in a number of areas:

  • Cultural geography, including non-representational theories
  • Space, politics and aesthetics
  • Time and our ways of imagining and relating to the future
  • Spaces and landscapes of authority
  • Post-humanist geographies
  • Cities, modernity, and biopolitical experience
  • Geographies of creative practice
  • Experimental historical geographies
  • Participatory practice and evaluation
