Rwy'n ecolegydd gyda ffocws ar systemau dŵr croyw, a'r rhan fwyaf o fy nghanolfannau ymchwil ar ddyfrgwn. Rwy'n tueddu i archwilio patrymau a gyrwyr, gan ofyn - beth sy'n gyrru amrywiad gofodol ac amserol ar draws y dirwedd? Rwy'n gweithio gyda llunwyr polisi a chymunedau i gyflawni effeithiau gwirioneddol ar gyfer cadwraeth a'r amgylchedd, ac wrth fy modd yn cyfathrebu fy angerdd am ecoleg i bobl iau trwy ymgysylltu ac allgymorth.
Rwy'n arwain Prosiect Dyfrgwn Prifysgol Caerdydd (CUOP), sy'n astudio dyfrgwn a'u hecosystemau, yn y DU ac yn rhyngwladol. Rydym yn defnyddio ystod eang o ddulliau mewn meysydd ymchwil gan gynnwys llygredd cemegol, genomeg poblogaeth, a chlefydau.
Mae biobanc o feinweoedd (a gasglwyd o ddyfrgwn a ddarganfuwyd yn farw) yn rhychwantu tri degawd, gan ein galluogi i deithio yn ôl trwy amser, ac archwilio newidiadau yn yr amgylchedd. Rydym wedi datgelu llygredd amgylcheddol ecosystemau dŵr croyw gydag ystod eang o gemegau gan gynnwys PFASs, PCBs, a metelau, ac yn cyfrannu at fonitro llywodraethol o lygryddion. Mae offer genetig a genomig sy'n datblygu'n gyflym wedi ein galluogi i archwilio newidiadau mewn cymunedau dŵr croyw trwy ddadansoddiad dietegol dyfrgwn, yn ogystal â nodi dirywiad ac adferiad cymhleth poblogaethau dyfrgi. Mae ein sgrinio ar gyfer clefydau yn helpu i gyfrannu at fioddiogelwch y DU, tra bod data ar roadkill yn ein helpu i lywio cadwraeth.
Am restr lawn o gyhoeddiadau, gweler y tab 'cyhoeddiadau' ar y dudalen hon, neu yma.
O ystyried fy ffocws ar ecosystemau dŵr croyw, mae fy aelodaeth o Sefydliad Ymchwil Dŵr Prifysgol Caerdydd yn darparu sbardun gwerthfawr ar gyfer cydweithio. Mae fy addysgu yn canolbwyntio'n bennaf ar drin data ac ystadegau, sgiliau a ddatblygwyd trwy'r angen i ddatgysylltu setiau data ecolegol cymhleth!

Ymchwil
Mae Prosiect Dyfrgwn Prifysgol Caerdydd yn gynllun cenedlaethol sy'n casglu dyfrgwn a ddarganfuwyd yn farw yng Nghymru a Lloegr ar gyfer archwiliad post mortem. Sefydlwyd y prosiect ym 1992 gyda'r nod o ddefnyddio meinweoedd a gasglwyd o'r ysglyfaethwr uchaf hwn i fonitro halogiad dyfrol. Mae'r cyfleoedd a gyflwynir gan gasglu rhywogaeth a warchodir yn Ewrop yn sylweddol, ac er bod monitro halogion yn parhau i fod yn agwedd allweddol ar y prosiect, mae amrywiaeth eang o ymchwil ychwanegol bellach yn cael ei gynnal o dan ymbarél CUOP.
Fel rhywogaeth nos ac anhygoel, mae'r dyfrgi Ewrasiaidd yn anodd iawn i'w astudio yn y gwyllt. Mae samplau a gasglwyd o anifeiliaid a ddarganfuwyd yn farw felly yn adnodd allweddol, gan ein galluogi i ymchwilio i agweddau ar eu ecoleg a'u hiechyd a fyddai fel arall yn anhygyrch. Yn ogystal â diddordeb cynhenid yn y rhywogaeth o safbwynt cadwraeth, mae gan y dyfrgi rôl ecolegol ddiddorol yn y rhyngwyneb rhwng cynefinoedd daearol a dyfrol, ac mae ar frig y gadwyn fwyd dŵr croyw. Felly, mae'n organeb enghreifftiol ddefnyddiol, a gellir ei ddefnyddio i ymchwilio i brosesau ecosystemau a phoblogaeth allweddol.
Mae'r prosiect bellach yn derbyn >200 o ddyfrgwn bob blwyddyn, ac rydym yn casglu ac yn archifo ystod eang o feinweoedd a data. Mae'r rhain yn ffurfio casgliad o ddeunydd sy'n ehangu'n barhaus sy'n cael ei ddefnyddio gan gydweithwyr cenedlaethol a rhyngwladol a myfyrwyr PhD.
Gellir gweld rhagor o fanylion am ein prosiectau ymchwil ar eneteg tirwedd, cyfathrebu cemegol, parasitoleg, tocsicoleg a diet, ac agweddau eraill ar fioleg dyfrgwn ar wefan Prosiect Dyfrgwn.

Bywgraffiad
After a degree in Biology at Cardiff University (1997), I returned to Cardiff to undertake a PhD at the Llysdinam field centre with Dr F Slater (1998-2003). The study focused on the breeding phenology and winter behaviour of common British amphibians, looking at temporal and spatial variation in phenology, and assessing how changes in climate might influence behaviour and body condition.
Following a short post-doctoral position in 2003 conducting a scoping study for research in the Cape Verde islands, I took over as head of the Cardiff University Otter Project in 2004. While using the otter as the study species, this has enabled me to develop a diverse range of inter-related research projects. These both further our understanding of this elusive European protected species, and use it as a model organism to investigate key ecological principles and processes.
