Deuthum yn ddarlithydd yng Nghaerdydd ym 1984 ar ôl ymchwil ddoethurol a ariannwyd gan y Cyngor Ymchwil Economaidd a Chymdeithasol yn y Ganolfan Astudiaethau Cymdeithasol-Gyfreithiol, Rhydychen. Roeddwn wedi ennill M Phil mewn Troseddeg yng Nghaergrawnt ar ôl gradd gyntaf yn y Gyfraith ym Mhrifysgol Rhydychen. Defnyddiodd fy PhD 'Ffurfiau Cyfreithiol, Ideoleg Gyfreithiol a'r Arolygiaeth Ffatri Gynnar' astudiaeth achos hanesyddol i archwilio'r rhyngweithio rhwng gwrthdaro cymdeithasol a ffurfiau cyfreithiol. Yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf, mae fy niddordebau ymchwil wedi canolbwyntio ar gyfiawnder troseddol cymharol. Rwyf wedi cyd-ysgrifennu dau fonograff a chyd-olygu sawl casgliad o draethodau yn ogystal â chyhoeddi dros 60 o erthyglau ar amrywiaeth o bynciau cyfiawnder troseddol. Mae'r rhain yn cynnwys astudiaethau dwyochrog manwl sy'n cymharu Cymru a Lloegr â'r Iseldiroedd, Ffrainc a'r Eidal. Fy nghyfrol gyhoeddedig ddiweddaraf oedd 'Criminal Justice and the Ideal Defendant in the making of Remorse and Responsibility' (Rhydychen: Hart 2023), a olygwyd ar y cyd â'r Athro Cyrus Tata, Prifysgol Strathclyde, yr Alban: prosiect cymharol rhyngwladol ar rôl edifeirwch a derbyn cyfrifoldeb mewn cyfiawnder troseddol. Ynddo cyhoeddais bennod sylweddol yn dilyn fy niddordeb hirsefydlog mewn proses droseddol Ffrengig: 'The enactment of political cultures in criminal process: remorse, responsibility and the unique individual before the French cours d'assises'
Rwyf wedi bod yn aelod o Fwrdd Golygyddol y Journal of Law and Society ers 1989. Am flynyddoedd lawer roeddwn yn Gyfarwyddwr ein rhaglen radd yn y Gyfraith a Ffrangeg ac yn gydlynydd ein cysylltiadau ag Amiens a Nantes. Rwyf wedi cyflawni nifer o rolau gweinyddol a rheoli dros y blynyddoedd. Roeddwn i'n gyd-Bennaeth dros dro Ysgol y Gyfraith a Gwleidyddiaeth 2021-2022 a Phennaeth Adran y Gyfraith 2019-2022.
Rwy'n cymryd rhan weithredol mewn trafodaeth a ffurfio polisi ynghylch cyfiawnder troseddol. Yn 2023, cefais fy mhenodi i Grŵp Cynghori Academaidd Cyfiawnder Ieuenctid Cymru (WYJAAG) sy'n cynghori Llywodraeth Cymru ar ddatblygu polisi cyfiawnder ieuenctid (gan gynnwys ei ddatganoli'n llawn). Yn 2024 cyd-ysgrifennais adroddiad a gomisiynwyd i LlC gyda Vera Baird KC 'Devolution of youth justice and the youth court in Wales'. Rwyf hefyd yn weithgar wrth ymateb i ymgynghoriadau eraill sy'n gysylltiedig â chyfiawnder troseddol. Yn fwyaf diweddar, rwyf wedi cyflwyno tystiolaeth i Adolygiad Annibynnol o Lysoedd Troseddol Syr Brian Leveson (2026) ac Adolygiad Annibynnol y Weinyddiaeth Gyfiawnder: Dyfodol llysoedd troseddol i blant (Cadeirydd, yr Athro David Ormerod), Awst 2026.
