Cadeirydd, Grŵp Amgylchiadau Esgusodol Israddedig
Rwy'n croesawu ymholiadau gan fyfyrwyr neu staff am Amgylchiadau Esgusodol neu Darfu ar Astudiaethau. Rwy'n darparu arweiniad ar y cymorth sydd ar gael pan fydd anawsterau'n codi, ac i esbonio'r goblygiadau ar gyfer astudiaethau academaidd. Mae manylion llawn polisïau'r Brifysgol ar gael yma: EC ac IoS.
Trosolwg ymchwil
Mae fy ymchwil yn canolbwyntio ar y themâu canlynol mewn ecoleg dyfrol, sy'n cysylltu ymchwil sylfaenol â phroblemau ymarferol a wynebir gan fiolegwyr a rheolwyr cadwraeth. Mae'r gwaith yn defnyddio amrywiaeth o offer ymddygiadol ac ecolegol ac yn ymchwilio i'r rhyngweithio rhwng ymddygiad unigol a phrosesau poblogaeth sy'n hanfodol ar gyfer deall a gwarchod bioamrywiaeth naturiol.
- Ecoleg ymddygiadol ac esblygiad addysg pysgod
- Canlyniadau newid hinsawdd i ymddygiad pysgod ac ecoleg afonydd
- Ansawdd yr ecosystem a dosbarthiad pysgod mewn afonydd
Mae pob thema yn cael ei ehangu o dan 'Ymchwil' uchod ac amlygir gwaith cydweithredol gydag amrywiol asiantaethau.

Ymchwil
Ecoleg ymddygiadol ac esblygiad addysg pysgod
Mae'r thema ymchwil hon yn mynd i'r afael â chwestiwn allweddol mewn ymddygiad anifeiliaid ac esblygiad bywyd cymdeithasol: sut mae anifeiliaid yn penderfynu pa grŵp i ymuno ag ef. Felly, mae'n cysylltu paramedrau ymddygiadol pwysig ag ecoleg a chadwraeth pysgod gwyllt. Mae gwaith ar y cyd â'r Athro A. Magurran (Prifysgol St Andrews) a Dr John Armstrong (Marine Scotland Science, Freshwater Laboratory, Pitlochry),
Canlyniadau newid hinsawdd i ecoleg salmonid
Mae newid yn yr hinsawdd yn cael effeithiau mawr ar batrymau dosbarthu a chyfansoddiad cymunedol organeddau afonydd ac rydym yn profi sut mae gwella cynefinoedd yn afonydd S. Cymru, er enghraifft, cynnal ac adfer coed llydanddail yn y parth torlannol, yn cynyddu gwytnwch eogiaid yr Iwerydd i newid yn yr hinsawdd. Mae'r gwaith hwn yn gydweithrediad sydd â chysylltiad cryf â diddordebau ymchwil yr Athro Steve Ormerod, aelod arall o'r OnE (Is-adran Ymchwil Organebau a'r Amgylchedd) a Dr. Isabelle Durance (Sefydliad Ymchwil Mannau Cynaliadwy), yn ogystal â chydweithwyr allanol (Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru, Ymddiriedolaeth Afonydd De Ddwyrain Cymru a'r Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust).
Mae gwaith arall yn y DU yn mabwysiadu dull ymddygiadol, gan archwilio cyllidebau amser eogiaid yr Iwerydd, defnyddio gofod (gan gynnwys ymddygiad cysgodol) a thwf, yn y gwyllt ac mewn nentydd dan do ac artiffisial, i ymchwilio i effeithiau lliniaru cysgodi afonol ar ecoleg eogiaid. Mae ymddygiad cysgodol pysgod yn ddiddordeb parhaus. Mae llawer o bysgod, gan gynnwys eog yr Iwerydd, yn nosol ar dymheredd oer (yn cysgodi mewn cynefinoedd rhyngsefydlog yn ystod golau dydd ac yn dod i'r amlwg i chwilota yn y nos). Mae ffactorau sy'n dylanwadu ar gysgodi, gan gynnwys tymheredd y dŵr, amodau golau (e.e. goleuadau stryd artiffisial) a chystadleuaeth o rywogaethau ymledol yn cael effeithiau pwysig a ragwelir ar oroesi trwy fwyta bwyd, twf ac osgoi ysglyfaethwyr. Mae ymchwil ar effaith goleuadau stryd artiffisial ar ecoleg dyfrol yn cael ei gynnal mewn cydweithrediad â Dr Bill Riley yn CEFAS (Canolfan yr Amgylchedd, Pysgodfeydd a Gwyddoniaeth Dyframaeth), Lowestoft.
Ansawdd yr ecosystem a dosbarthiad pysgod mewn afonydd
Gall y gwasanaethau a ddarperir gan nentydd ac afonydd, gan gynnwys darparu pysgod sy'n werthfawr yn economaidd ac yn ddiwylliannol, gael eu peryglu gan effeithiau newid hinsawdd yn y dyfodol ar argaeledd a thymheredd dŵr, ar y cyd â phwysau anthropogenig eraill fel tynnu dŵr. Mae gwaith a wneir fel rhan o gonsortiwm DURESS (Amrywiaeth mewn Afonydd yr Ucheldir ar gyfer Cynaliadwyedd Gwasanaeth Ecosystemau) yn profi'r rhagdybiaeth bod bioamrywiaeth yn ganolog i ddarparu gwasanaethau ecosystem afonydd yr ucheldir yn gynaliadwy o dan newid defnydd tir a hinsawdd (www.nerc-duress.org). Mae gwaith arall, mewn cydweithrediad â Dr Isabelle Durance (Sefydliad Ymchwil Dŵr) a Dr Hefin Jones (OnE), yn ymchwilio i'r mecanweithiau sy'n cynnal poblogaethau pysgod mewn cyfundrefnau llif amrywiol.

Bywgraffiad
I studied for my first degree at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth between 1990 and 1993, and for my MSc at the University of Oxford in 1994. I completed my PhD on the schooling behaviour of freshwater fish at the University of St. Andrews in 1997 where I was supervised by Professor Anne Magurran (http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~guppy/). During this time my field work was based in Trinidad and Tobago, and at the CEH River Laboratory, Dorset (http://www.ceh.ac.uk/sections/re/re.html ) In 1998 I began working as a NERC Research Fellow based at the University of Glasgow (http://www.gla.ac.uk/ibls/DEEB/) and the Fisheries Research Services, Freshwater Laboratory, Pitlochry (http://www.marlab.ac.uk/FRS.Web/default.aspx). I joined Cardiff University in 2000 when I was awarded an extension to my NERC fellowship and was simultaneously appointed as lecturer in animal ecology. In 2007 I was appointed Senior Lecturer.
