Jane Henderson, BSc, MSc, ACR, FIIC, SFHEA

Reader at Cardiff University.

I have been working in and studying in conservation and collections care in Wales since 1984. I teach on the BSc in Conservation and MSc’s in Collection Care and in Conservation Practice. I currently serve as a trustee on the Welsh Federation of Museum and Art Galleries and The Cynon Valley Museum Trust. I am currently serving on the editorial panel of the Journal of the Institute for Conservation, the ICOM –CC preventive conservation working group and the Journal of the American Institue for conservation special edition on collection care.

I currently represent Icon on the CEN TC 346 WG11, which has looked at a standard for the conservation process and will shortly consider documentation and tendering. I  received support from the Welsh Government via CyMAL to attend these working group meetings.

I represent Welsh Museums on the Welsh Government’s Museum Strategy review group which helps direct government in the formation of museum policy. I am a member of a working group to create a strategy and vision for the conservation of the moveable heritage across Welsh institutions.

I publish on issues related to: conservation decision making; influence for collections care; sustainable conservation practice; teaching and assessing conservation. My interests relate to sustainability, influence and decision making and I am keen to explore both ideas and practice in these areas. I am determined to work towards equality of access within the heritage sector whether in terms of users engaging with collections or managers making choices for heritage policy.

Within Cardiff University I currently sit on University Court having recently completed two terms on Senate representing my school.

I am the Assessment and Feedback Lead for the School of History Archaeology and Religion.

I represented UCU on: the equal pay reviews in 2010/11 and 2014; the REF Eqaulity and diversity review in 2014; equality and diversity commitee from March 2014 - October 2017.

Surveying the Conservation Landscape

Commissioned by CyMAL and National Library of Wales (NLW), Aberystwyth a report which revisits three key recommendations from the 2000 Lisc report 'The Future of our Recorded Past'. The research considered whether these recommendations had been actioned, remained valid or required further actions. The author reviewed a range of relevant strategy documents and interviewed leading figures representing key stakeholders in the preservation and care of the collections in Wales. The report found that actions had happened under each recommendation, that in general the recommendations were still considered a priority but that each should be adapted in the light of actions in the last decade.http://gov.wales/topics/culture-tourism-sport/museums-archives-libraries/collections-and-conservation/surveying-conservation-landscape/?lang=en

Spotlight on Museums

A comprehensive survey of Wales' museums and collections published by of the Welsh Assembly Government. 106 of Wales's 143 museums participated in the survey, including Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales sites and independent and local authority museums.  The detailed survey looked at the subject, number and significance of collections, access and learning, audience development and physical aspects such as buildings, facilities and storage. It also provides information on the numbers of staff and volunteers working in the sector, working patterns and finance including admission charges, budgets and funding and support arrangements.  Funded by CyMAL

What's In Store

In 2003 a partnership comprising The Council of Museums in Wales, National Museums & Galleries of Wales and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales commissioned a survey of the Welsh archaeological archive. The survey, undertaken by Jane Henderson and Phil Parkes of Cardiff University, aimed at providing evidence of the extent and physical condition of archaeological archives relating to Wales that exist in museums, archaeological units, universities, other institutions and with independent archaeologists. The extensive survey led to a detailed report about the size and condition of the archive and included a number of recommendations. Following consultation within the profession eight recommendations emerged and these are outlined in the report What's in Store? which was published and presented to Alun Pugh, Minister for Culture, Welsh Language and Sport in March 2004.  Funded by Council of Museums in Wales, National Museum Wales, RCAHM

The Future of our Recorded Past

In 2000 commissioned by Libraries and Information Services Council Wales LISC (W)) to offer authoritative advice to the Welsh Assembly Government on the state and status of library and archive collections in Wales. LISC (W) commissioned the survey to examine library and archive collections in repositories in Wales in particular the status of their conservation and preservation needs in the light of the holding institutions' other responsibilities.
