Spotlight on Museums 2020

Commissioned by Welsh Government (MALD) as PI working with Phil Parkes and the Federation of Museums and Art Galleries of Wales to collect data, statistics and information about Welsh museums and their work to enable the articulation of the value of the impacts they make and inform policy. The research will be used to help with strategic planning for museums in Wales, help museums benchmark with other museums and assist the Welsh Assembly Government to determine policy priorities.

Surveying the Conservation Landscape

Commissioned by Welsh Government (CyMAL) and National Library of Wales (NLW), Aberystwyth to produce a report which revisits three key recommendations from the 2000 Lisc report 'The Future of our Recorded Past'. The research considered whether these recommendations had been actioned, remained valid or required further actions. I reviewed a range of relevant strategy documents and interviewed leading figures representing key stakeholders in the preservation and care of the collections in Wales. The research found that actions had happened under each recommendation, that in general the recommendations were still considered a priority but that each should be adapted in the light of actions in the last decade.http://gov.wales/topics/culture-tourism-sport/museums-archives-libraries/collections-and-conservation/surveying-conservation-landscape/?lang=en

Spotlight on Museums 2011

A comprehensive survey of Wales' museums and collections published by of the Welsh Assembly Government. 106 of Wales's 143 museums participated in the survey, including Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales sites and independent and local authority museums.  The detailed survey looked at the subject, number and significance of collections, access and learning, audience development and physical aspects such as buildings, facilities and storage. It also provides information on the numbers of staff and volunteers working in the sector, working patterns and finance including admission charges, budgets and funding and support arrangements.  Funded by CyMAL

What's In Store

In 2003 a partnership comprising The Council of Museums in Wales, National Museums & Galleries of Wales and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales commissioned a survey of the Welsh archaeological archive. The survey, undertaken by Jane Henderson and Phil Parkes of Cardiff University, aimed at providing evidence of the extent and physical condition of archaeological archives relating to Wales that exist in museums, archaeological units, universities, other institutions and with independent archaeologists. The extensive survey led to a detailed report about the size and condition of the archive and included a number of recommendations. Following consultation within the profession eight recommendations emerged and these are outlined in the report What's in Store? which was published and presented to Alun Pugh, Minister for Culture, Welsh Language and Sport in March 2004.  Funded by Council of Museums in Wales, National Museum Wales, RCAHM

The Future of our Recorded Past

In 2000 commissioned by Libraries and Information Services Council Wales LISC (W)) to offer authoritative advice to the Welsh Assembly Government on the state and status of library and archive collections in Wales. LISC (W) commissioned the survey to examine library and archive collections in repositories in Wales in particular the status of their conservation and preservation needs in the light of the holding institutions' other responsibilities.
