Trosolwg
Rwy'n Athro Systemau Gwybodaeth Ddaearyddol yn Ysgol Cyfrifiadureg a Gwybodeg Caerdydd gyda diddordeb arbennig mewn adfer gwybodaeth ddaearyddol (GIR). Mae fy niddordebau presennol yn GIR yn canolbwyntio ar
- georeferencing (h.y. pennu cyfesurynnau ar gyfer) testun megis mewn postiadau cyfryngau cymdeithasol ar gyfer arsylwadau bywyd gwyllt ac ar gyfer ymateb i drychinebau, ac mewn cofnodion hanes naturiol o ddigwyddiad sbesimenau mewn amgueddfeydd a herbaria;
- adfer gwybodaeth amgylcheddol o gofnodion biolegol ac o'r cyfryngau cymdeithasol, gan gynnwys arsylwadau o rywogaethau o fywyd gwyllt, a gwybodaeth am gynefin a all gyfrannu at astudiaethau o fioamrywiaeth;
- modelu'r defnydd o derminoleg iaith ofodol, sy'n aml yn amwys, er mwyn galluogi dehongli a chynhyrchu disgrifiadau iaith naturiol o leoliad.
Mae ymchwil arall yn ymwneud â'r defnydd o ddulliau gweledigaeth gyfrifiadurol ar gyfer dadansoddi arsylwadau bywyd gwyllt, ac adnabod nodweddion adeiladau i gefnogi creu modelau 3D wedi'u anodi gyda'u nodweddion pensaernïol.
Roeddwn i'n gyd-gadeirydd y gyfres o weithdai ar Adfer Gwybodaeth Ddaearyddol a'r gweithdy Speaking of Location.
Roeddwn yn rhan o rai o'r mentrau cynnar yn GIR gan gynnwys arwain prosiect EU SPIRIT ar ddylunio peiriannau chwilio sy'n ymwybodol ofodol a datblygu dulliau newydd ar gyfer mynegeio dogfennau gofodol-testunol, newyddiaduron enwau lleoedd ac ontolegau, a modelu enwau lleoedd amwys gyda thystiolaeth o'r we.
Mae sawl prosiect yr wyf wedi gweithio arnynt wedi bod mewn cydweithrediad â'r Arolwg Ordnans Prydain (OS). Arweiniodd un o'r prosiectau hyn, ym maes gosod label mewn cartograffeg, at ddatblygu'r injan gosod label Maplex sy'n fodiwl yn y cynnyrch ESRI ArcGIS Pro. Dechreuwyd y gwaith hwnnw ym Mhrifysgol De Cymru, gyda PhD gan Tony Cooke gan ddefnyddio rhaglennu rhesymeg, ac ailddatblygu meddalwedd dilynol gan John McBride gan ddefnyddio dulliau cwbl weithdrefnol. Roedd cwmni deillio Hollybush, yr oeddwn yn gyfarwyddwr technegol arno, yn cyflogi staff technegol, marchnata ac ariannol eraill cyn i'r cynnyrch gael ei gaffael gan ESRI a'i ddefnyddio i ddechrau fel cynnyrch annibynnol gan gwmnïau fel yr AA, Rand McNally a HarperCollins (yn y Times Atlas of the World). Ar hyn o bryd mae'n rhan o ArcGIS Pro, gyda'r datblygiad technegol yn parhau yng nghanolfan Ymchwil a Datblygu ESRI yng Nghaerdydd. Arweiniodd prosiect arall gydag OS at ddatblygu'r wefan gyda Florian Twaroch yourplacenames.com i gaffael gwybodaeth am y defnydd o enwau lleoedd gwerinol.
Rwyf hefyd wedi gweithio ar wahanol agweddau eraill ar gartograffeg gyfrifiadurol ac yn cadw diddordeb ynddynt, yn enwedig cyffredinoli mapiau, yn ogystal â chronfeydd data gofodol aml-raddfa, a modelu tri dimensiwn o ddata geowyddonol.

Ymchwil
Fy mhrif ddiddordebau ymchwil yw mewn systemau gwybodaeth ddaearyddol (GIS), cartograffeg gyfrifiadurol ac adfer gwybodaeth ddaearyddol benodol ar y we. Ers sawl blwyddyn rwyf wedi gweithio ar gynrychioliad nodweddion mapiau ar sawl lefel o fanylder, gan arwain at ddatblygu cronfeydd data gofodol aml-raddfa a thechnegau ar gyfer cyffredinoli mapiau awtomataidd. Mae ymchwil ar beiriannau chwilio gwe sy'n ymwybodol o ddaearyddiaeth wedi bod yn ymwneud â mynegeio gofodol o ddogfennau a delweddau gwe a dylunio ontolegau sy'n cynrychioli gwybodaeth am derminoleg a ffurf lleoedd daearyddol. Rwyf hefyd wedi gweithio ar ganfod newid amgylcheddol, labelu mapiau, integreiddio data a modelu 3D ar dir a ffosilau.
