Timau a rolau for Ruselle Meade
Uwch Ddarlithydd mewn Astudiaethau Japaneaidd, Cyfarwyddwr Ymchwil
Trosolwyg
Mae fy ymchwil yn canolbwyntio ar rôl iaith a chyfieithu yng nghylchrediad byd-eang gwybodaeth, ac mae wedi'i leoli ar groesffordd hanes modern Japan, hanes gwyddoniaeth, ac astudiaethau cyfieithu. Rwy'n gweld cyfieithu gwyddonol a thechnegol fel safleoedd creadigrwydd ac arloesi, ac wedi archwilio arferion cyfieithwyr o'r fath yn Japan ddiwedd y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg a dechrau'r ugeinfed ganrif.
Rwy'n mwynhau cyfieithu ac wedi cyfieithu straeon byrion ac erthyglau academaidd. Yn flaenorol, trefnais weithdy cyfieithu llenyddol a gynlluniwyd i ddatblygu cyfieithwyr trwy roi profiad ymarferol iddynt yn y broses gyfieithu llenyddol fasnachol. Y canlyniad oedd blodeugerdd o ffuglen a gyhoeddwyd gan Kurodahan Press.
Rwy'n Gyfarwyddwr Ymchwil yn yr Ysgol Ieithoedd Modern. Ar hyn o bryd rwyf hefyd yn gwasanaethu ar Gyngor Cymdeithas Astudiaethau Japan Prydain (BAJS) ac rwy'n brif drefnydd cynhadledd tair blynedd y gymdeithas, a gynhelir ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd ym mis Medi 2025.

Ymchwil
Mae fy ymchwil yn canolbwyntio ar rôl iaith a chyfieithu yng nghylchrediad byd-eang gwybodaeth, ac mae wedi'i leoli ar groesffordd hanes modern Japan, hanes gwyddoniaeth, ac astudiaethau cyfieithu. Rwy'n gweld cyfieithu gwyddonol a thechnegol fel safleoedd creadigrwydd ac arloesedd, ac wedi archwilio arfer cyfieithwyr o'r fath yn Japan ddiwedd y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg a dechrau'r ugeinfed ganrif.
Mae prosiectau'r gorffennol a'r presennol wedi archwilio bywydau ac ysgrifau ffigurau gwyddonol Japaneaidd trawswladol y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg fel Minakata Kumagusu (1867-1941) ac Ishikawa Chiyomatsu (1860-1935). Roeddwn i'n gyd-ymchwilydd ar y prosiect a ariennir gan UKRI, The Japanese scientist in Japan and in the world: de-centering the history of science, a oedd yn archwilio ymddangosiad y 'gwyddonydd' fel categori cymdeithasol a phroffesiynol yn Japan, ac a ymchwiliodd i rôl rhwydweithiau trawswladol yn natblygiad gyrfaoedd gwyddonwyr Japan.
Yn ddiweddar, rwyf wedi dechrau ymchwilio i gysylltiadau Affro-Japaneaidd, deallusol a chorfforol (ymfudo), gyda ffocws ar ffigurau Caribïaidd. Rwyf wedi bod yn archwilio cyfieithiadau Japaneaidd o fywgraffiadau yr arwr chwyldroadol Haitian Toussaint Louverture, gan ddadansoddi sut mae'r rhain wedi cael eu defnyddio, ers dros ganrif, i ddarparu sylwebaeth feirniadol ar ddadleuon domestig Japan. Rwyf hefyd yn cynnal ymchwil ar brofiadau morwyr Gorllewin India ym mhorthladdoedd cytundeb Japan ar ddiwedd y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg.
Addysgu
I teach on the following modules:
- Japanese History
- Intermediate Japanese (reading)
- Advanced Readings in Japanese Business
- Introduction to Translation Methods
- Undergraduate dissertation in Japanese Studies
I also supervise dissertations on the MA in Translation Studies programme.
Bywgraffiad
Before joining Cardiff University in September 2015, I was a lecturer in Japanese studies at the University of Manchester and then a JSPS postdoctoral fellow at the University of Tokyo. I was also awarded a D. Kim Foundation fellowship in the history of science in East Asia.
I obtained my PhD from the University of Manchester in 2013, and hold an MA from SOAS (London).
I originally trained as an engineer. After completing undergraduate studies, I moved to Tokyo where I worked for an intellectual property translation firm. This experience sparked my interest in history of technical translation – the focus of my doctoral research – and in the development of science and technology in Japan.
Meysydd goruchwyliaeth
Mae gen i ddiddordeb mewn goruchwylio myfyrwyr PhD ym meysydd:
- Hanes cyfieithu, yn enwedig mewn cyd-destunau Dwyrain Asia
- cyfieithu arbenigol (gwyddonol a thechnegol)
- Hanes modern Japan
- Cof rhyfel a chofeb
