Gyda dros ddeng mlynedd ar hugain o brofiad mewn ymarfer gofal llygaid, ymchwil, addysg a pholisi, mae Barbara Ryan wedi gweithio ar draws gwahanol leoliadau, gan gynnwys prifysgolion, practisau optometrig, gwasanaethau llygaid ysbytai, y sector gwirfoddol, a Llywodraeth Cymru. Fel Arweinydd Clinigol ar gyfer Gwasanaeth Golwg Isel Cymru (2002 i 2012), arweiniodd yn llwyddiannus y broses o drosglwyddo gwasanaethau golwg isel o 20 o safleoedd ysbyty i 200 o bractisau optometreg ledled Cymru. Rhwng 2009 a 2023, gwasanaethodd Barbara fel Cyfarwyddwr Canolfan Addysg Ôl-raddedig Optometreg Cymru (WOPEC), lle chwaraeodd rôl ganolog wrth ei datblygu'n sefydliad blaenllaw ar gyfer addysg ôl-raddedig a Datblygiad Proffesiynol Parhaus i weithwyr iechyd llygaid proffesiynol ledled y byd, gan wasanaethu dros 4,000 o ddysgwyr bob blwyddyn. Yn ei rôl fel Prif Gynghorydd Optometrig i Lywodraeth Cymru, dylanwadodd ar newidiadau polisi a oedd yn paratoi'r ffordd ar gyfer diwygiadau deddfwriaethol a chytundebol sylweddol mewn optometreg yng Nghymru. Mae ei hymchwil yn rhychwantu gofal sylfaenol ac eilaidd, yn ogystal ag iechyd a gofal cymdeithasol, gan ddefnyddio dulliau cymysg i fynd i'r afael â heriau cymhleth ym maes iechyd llygaid.
