I am a Senior Lecturer (US Associate Professor) in Sustainable Environmental Design at the Welsh School of Architecture (WSA). Prior to joining WSA, I was a lecturer in Architecture Design-and-Technology at De Montfort University in UK. I have a background in environmental design, energy performance of buildings (thermal modelling), CFD microclimate modelling, outdoor thermal comfort and climate-responsive urban design. Previously, I was a postdoctoral research associate at the Department of Architecture at the University of Cambridge for ‘Managing Air for Green Inner Cities’ (MAGIC), developing urban scenarios to investigate the influence of the built environment on air pollution and Urban Heat Island (UHI) impact. Prior to that, I was a research associate for Smart Design: Human-centric Planning of Urban Districts in the same department. As a personal research agenda and continuation from the current research activity, I am developing the methodological framework to carry out research in the area of human-centric planning of urban districts to examine how thermal comfort in high-density urban spaces affect health and wellbeing of people. As a Fellow of ‘Faculty for the Future’ Fellowship from 2012 to 2016, I completed my PhD studies at the University of Cambridge, Department of Architecture. The research (link to Abstract) investigated the impact of urban form on urban micro-climate and how this affected outdoor thermal comfort in public spaces and building energy performance in the adjacent buildings in a high-density, tropical context. At Cambridge, I served as the GreenBRIDGE President (Oct 2014 - Dec 2015) and a seminar coordinator (Oct 2013 - Oct 2015). GreenBRIDGE is a former society of graduate researchers at the University of Cambridge with an interest in the sustainability of the built environment. I was a coordinator for the Martin Centre Research Seminar Series (Jan 2013 – Jan 2014). I served as the Chief Editor for the Cambridge Architecture Journal: Future Domestic, Issue 24. Currently, I am an Academic Adviser for Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in UK.

I have recently completed a Research-England QR-Funded GCRF Research as a PI at De Montfort University that investigated socio-cultural and environmental experiences in low-income, tropical housing called the Loving Community in Ahmedabad in India. The living conditions in these households and working practices of the inhabitants in terms of how the building and its internal-external spaces are used, are explored through semi-structured interviews and monitoring. The study has interesting findings (under publication) which could be implemented in future design of low-income housing in the study area.
My current research focuses on smart design to support human-centric planning of urban districts, with an emphasis on health and well-being. By particularly looking into high-density urban spaces, with higher exposure to heat, air pollution and noise and reduced access to green spaces; I want to know how people’s behaviour to walking or cycling to their near destinations is affected. I aim to identify the impact of changing outdoor microclimatic conditions in urban spaces in cities and to examine how well-designed and thermally comfortable urban spaces can play a role to enhance health and wellbeing through physical activity and social interaction in the context of climate change.
My PhD research investigated the impact of urban form on urban micro-climate and how this affected outdoor thermal comfort in public spaces and building energy performance in the adjacent buildings in a high-density, tropical context. The research involved microclimatic analysis of urban geometry characteristics, CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations of theoretical and real-world case studies, statistical analysis of thermal comfort surveys and building energy performance evaluation of parametric and actual examples. The multidisciplinary approach in this research attempted to link urban design and planning with urban climatology and many other relevant fields of expertise that are essential for making liveable and sustainable cities.
