Gan ddilyn ei angerdd am ddeunyddiau datblygedig, cwblhaodd Dr. Subburaj ei PhD mewn Gwyddor Deunydd ym Mhrifysgol Anna, Chennai, India, yn 2018. Canolbwyntiodd ei ymchwil doethurol ar led-ddargludyddion cyfansawdd, yn benodol eu twf gan ddefnyddio dyddodiad anwedd cemegol metel-organig (MOCVD), ac yna nodweddu a chynhyrchu dyfeisiau optoelectroneg.
Ar hyn o bryd, mae Dr. Surender yn Gydymaith Ymchwil yn yr Ysgol Peirianneg, Canolfan Peirianneg Amledd Uchel (CHFE), Prifysgol Caerdydd. Mae ei waith yn canolbwyntio ar faes arloesol micro-LEDau Gallium Nitrad (GaN) ciwbig sy'n newid yn gyflym. Gyda sylfaen gref mewn agweddau damcaniaethol ac ymarferol ar ddeunyddiau lled-ddargludyddion, mae Dr. Surender yn parhau i gyfrannu at hyrwyddo peirianneg amledd uchel a thechnoleg optoelectroneg.
