Clefyd thyroid
Mae fy ymchwil yn canolbwyntio ar ganlyniadau sut mae amrywiad cymedrol mewn statws thyroid yn dylanwadu ar ganlyniadau iechyd allweddol. Mae'r gwaith hwn yn cwmpasu pedair thema yn fras.
1) amnewid hormonau thyroid, gan gynnwys dewisiadau amgen i fonotherapi LT4 fel LT3 hirdymor.
2) Pathogenesis o Orbitopathi Graves (clefyd y llygad thyroid) a threialon clinigol i wella ei ganlyniad.
3) Statws thyroid yn ystod beichiogrwydd a'i berthynas â chanlyniadau obstetreg allweddol. Mae fy ngwaith yn cynnwys sut i wneud y gorau o driniaeth ac a ddylem sgrinio ar gyfer clefyd y thyroid yn ystod beichiogrwydd.
4) Trothwyon triniaeth mewn hypothyroidiaeth ac a ddylid gwneud hyn yn individuliased.

Math 1 Diabetes
Mae'r gwaith hwn yn canolbwyntio ar y ffordd orau o ddefnyddio imiwnotherapi risg isel mewn unigolion sydd mewn perygl o ddatblygu neu â diabetes math 1 newydd o ddechrau. Rwy'n Ddarllenydd Clinigol a Meddyg Ymgynghorol sy'n arbenigo mewn epidemioleg a diabetes ac endocrinoleg ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd ac Ysbyty Athrofaol Cymru. Derbyniais fy ngraddau meddygol israddedig o Brifysgol St Andrews a Phrifysgol Manceinion a chynhaliais fy hyfforddiant meddygol craidd yn Ne Manceinion ac yna yn y ddau ysbyty addysgu yng Nghaeredin (Ysbyty Cyffredinol y Gorllewin ac Ysbyty Brenhinol Caeredin. Dechreuais hyfforddiant arbenigol mewn diabetes ac endocrinoleg ym Mryste a Chaerfaddon cyn derbyn ysgoloriaeth MRC fawreddog i ymgymryd â gradd meistr mewn epidemioleg yn Ysgol Hylendid a Meddygaeth Drofannol Llundain.
Yna ymunais â chynllun Hyfforddiant Academaidd Clinigol Cymru (WCAT). Cwblheais fy PhD mewn epidemioleg thyroid o dan yr Athro Colin Dayan (Caerdydd) a'r Athro Nicholas Timpson (Bryste). Canolbwyntiodd fy PhD ar effeithiau amrywiad cyffredin mewn statws thyroid yn ogystal â rhagnodi hormonau thyroid a sgrinio thyroid yn ystod beichiogrwydd. Yn fy PhD, cynhaliais hefyd y dadansoddiad genom cyfan cyntaf o swyddogaeth thyroid mewn carfannau a'r astudiaeth Hapeiddio Mendelian gyntaf mewn thyroidoleg. Yn dilyn fy PhD rwyf wedi bod yn ymwneud yn helaeth â threialon CATS (sgrinio thyroid mewn beichiogrwydd) a CIRTED (clefyd y thyroid llygaid). Yn ogystal â pharhau â'm hymchwil mewn clefyd thyroid, rwyf wedi ymestyn fy ngwaith i imiwnoleg diabetes math 1 a monitro glwcos parhaus. Rwy'n gobeithio defnyddio fy sgiliau ymchwil a'm harbenigedd mewn treialon clinigol i ddatblygu treialon llwyfan i nodi cyfundrefnau triniaeth sy'n cadw swyddogaeth beta-gelloedd mewn unigolion sydd â diabetes math 1 ac sydd mewn perygl ohono. Rwyf hefyd yn defnyddio monitro glwcos parhaus i nodi marcwyr newydd o swyddogaeth celloedd beta.
Rwyf wedi derbyn gwobrau mewn cynadleddau cenedlaethol a rhyngwladol am fy ngwaith ac mae gen i dros 70 o gyhoeddiadau yn ymwneud â'r thyroid a diabetes, gan gynnwys cyhoeddiadau yn y Lancet, JAMA, Lancet Diabetes ac Endocrinology, JAMA Internal Medicine, Nature Reviews Endocrinology a Nature Communications.
