Hanxing Zhu is a senior lecturer in Mechanics of Materials and member of the Institute of Mechanics and Advance Materials in the Cardiff School of Engineering. Dr Zhu did his BEng at Xidian University (1979-1983) and MEng at Zhejiang University (1983-1986).  He then worked as an Assistant Lecturer (86-88), Lecturer (88-93), Associate Professor (1993-1994), the teaching board head and deputy head of the Engineering Mechanics Division (with around 20 academics) (93-94) at the Department of Mechanics, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China. Dr Zhu did his PhD in Metallurgy and Materials at Birmingham University (Oct. 1994 – July 1997). Prior to joining the Cardiff School of Engineering, he worked as a research associate at Cambridge University (1997-2003).

Dr Zhu`s research involves theoretical analysis, computational simulation and experimental measurements.  His research interests mainly focus on the mechanical and physical properties of materials and structures, including

  • Cellular/porous materials
  • Biological materials and hierarchical materials
  • Nano-materials
  • Composite materials
  • Fibrous materials
  • Fracture mechanics
  • Light-harvesting
  • Functional materials

Dr Zhu has authored/co-authored over 100 publications.   Most of his papers are published in international research journals (e.g. J. Mech. Phys. Solids; Int. J. Plasticity; J. Biomechanics; Acta Mater.; 2D Mater.; Energy Env. Sci.; Scitific Reports).   His research papers are cited over 2000 times and his H-index is 20 (Google Scholar) or 19 (SCI). Dr Zhu delivered many invited research presentations at universities (e.g. National Centre of Nano Sci. & Tech. of China,  Peking Univ.,  Shanghai Jiaotong Univ.,  Huazhong Univ. of Sci. & Tech., Fraunhofer Institute, Glasgow Univ.) and international conferences.  He has acted as an external PhD examiner for universities, e.g. Imperial College, Manchester University, Glasgow University. He served as Lead Guest Editor for a special edition of the journal Advances in Condensed Matter Physics (2014) and is an editorial board member for a few international journals, e.g.  World Journal of Nano Science and Engineering;  Scitific Reports; Journal of Advances in nanomaterials;  Journal of Nanoscience:  Current Research. Dr Zhu is a reviewer of papers for many  international journals, e.g.
