Teams and roles for Dave Marshall

Overview

Prof. David Marshall has been working in the field of computer vision since 1986. David obtained a B.Sc. degree in mathematics from University College, Cardiff in 1986 and then
undertook a Ph.D. in three dimensional inspection of manufactured objects at Cardiff University, working in collaboration with the Sowerby Research Centre, British Aerospace. In 1989
he joined Cardiff University as lecturer and is now Professor of Computer Vision in the School of Computer Science and Informatics. He also the leader of the Schools Visual Computing Research Group (a highly successful research group with 11 full-time academic staff members) and the newly established Computational Music Research Group. David's research interests include articulated
modelling of human faces, models of human motion, statistical modelling, high dimensional subspace analysis, audio/video image processing, and data/sensor fusion. He has published
over 150 papers and one book in these research areas and has attracted over £4M in research funding over his academic career. David enjoys close collaboration with national and
international external bodies (incl. British Aerospace, EADS, General Dynamics, QinetiQ, Museum of Natural Sciences, Madrid, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh,DSTO Australia, Free
University Brussels) and has good inter-disciplinary research links within the University (incl. Schools of Psychology, Engineering, Dentistry and Optometry). He is currently is a Co-Director of
Postgraduate Student Research in the School of Computer Science and Informatics.

Research

I am a member of the Visual Computing Research Group. I am also Director of the interdisciplinary Human Factors Technology Centre involving the Schools of Engineering, Psychology and Computer Science and Informatics. My research interests cover a range of topics in computer vision, from low-level processing of images (both 2D and 3D) to high-level modelling and object recognition strategies, and data/information fusion. For many years I worked on 3D imagery with applications in object recognition and automatic inspection of mechanical objects. This research continues in the area of reverse engineering - building boundary representation CAD models from point data scanned from the surface of engineering objects. Other recent research activities have investigated eigenanalysis of images where some core algorithms have been developed to incrementally build and learn eigenmodels. This work has been applied to articulated human motion and speech driven facial animation. One other area of current interest in data/information fusion, where my research has been driven by defence/military applications with funding from British Aerospace and the newly established MOD funded Data Information Fusion Defence Technology Centre (www.difdtc.com).
