Overview
Neil has worked in various mental health settings since 1985 in NHS in UK (England & Wales) and Australia. Neil has also worked in the private sector at the Priory Hospital Bristol, and since 2001 at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board within the Department's of Liaison Psychiatry, Traumatic Stress Service as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist with responsibility for the partnership with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service & the NHS until 2008.
Neil is currently employed as the Director and Consultant Clinical Lead at the Veterans' NHS Wales service (VNHSW). The service offers out-patient mental health assessment and treatment for ex-service personnel with service related mental health problems. For more information visit www.veteranswales.co.uk. Neil was a Captain in the Army Reserves with 203 Welsh Field Hospital. He deployed to Afghanistan October 2013 – January 2014 on Herrick 19a as part of the Army Field Mental Health Team. He holds an Honorary Senior Research Fellow title with Cardiff University.
Neil regularly lectures and runs workshops on the psychological effects of trauma and psychological therapy for medical and non-medical personnel. He has written over 50 peer reviewed papers, book chapters - on trauma focused cognitive behavioural psychotherapy, ex-service personnel, early interventions for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and eye movement desensitisation reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.
Neil has been involved in several RCTs and Systematic Reviews with the Cardiff University Traumatic Stress Research Group led by Prof Jonathan Bisson, investigating novel intervention for treating PTSD.

Neil has been involved in four randomised controlled trials for PTSD, a) treatment resistant PTSD in veterans, testing a novel virtual reality and treadmill therapy (3MDR) as a Principal Investigator (study completed July 2019); b) testing a guided self-help website vs waiting list (study completed 2017) c) vs traditional Cognitive Therapy for PTSD in civilians (completed March 2021) d) testing the Rewind Technique (1991) against a waitlist control for PTSD (completed March 2022).
