Overview
I'm an architect with 25 years experience of healthcare-design plus I'm an ex-patient having received treatment for cancer on two separate occassions. Combining these factors should provide a potent mix and an opportunity to undertake some informed and much-needed research into the nature of inpatient spaces. Despite extensive research already having been undertaken, my experience suggests there is still a need for improvement. My aim is to thoroughly analyse current issues and suggest potential solutions with the hope that future design guidance for new facilities may take some influence from my research.

Understanding and Addressing the Environmental Needs of Inpatients in Haematology and Stem-Cell Transplant Settings
Based on personal experience, there is a need for the patient experience to better inform the design of inpatient spaces and selections of components, materials and configurations. The inpatient voice needs to be prioritised in future design proposals. I propose to review existing related research, obtain feedback and input from a range of inpatient and clinician sources and to suggest proposals for improvement.
