Mrs Shalini Ganasan-Ryan

Graduate Tutor

Cardiff Business School

I graduated as a pharmacist in 2004 and have worked as a clinical pharmacist across primary and secondary care. I qualified as an advanced clinical practitioner in 2018 and worked in primary care in this role.

Prior to taking up the PhD research position at Cardiff Business School, I worked on strategic, national initiatives in my role as a Clinical / Academic fellow at Health Education England. In this role, I was instrumental in researching workforce development initiatives for pharmacists. Alongside this role, I worked as senior lecturer at London South Bank University, lecturing on the Non-Medical Prescribing programme.

This cumulative experience has shaped my interest in patient safety in complex, healthcare organisations. As an Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) funded scholar, I am pleased to be embarking on my PhD at my alma mater, on a collaborative project between the Cardiff Business School and Medical School.

PhD title: Development and Testing of the Patient Safety Risk Assessment (PASTA) tool to maximise learning from patient safety incidents in healthcare organisations

My research revolves around healthcare organisations as complex and dynamic, socio-technical systems. I am particularly interested in understanding risks from a systems approach, with an emphasis on prevention of avoidable harm.

Healthcare related harm has failed to reduce significantly over the last three decades and more needs to be done to ensure system resilience. I hope that my research into risk assessment and management broadly, can contribute towards a safer healthcare system for the 21st century.

The outputs of this research may be of interest to patients and their family, carers, healthcare leaders, multi-disciplinary healthcare staff, managers, academics, policy makers and the government.
