Kidney research

Building on my clinical career in kidney nursing, my research has focused on kidney care, particularly peritoneal dialysis. I am a co-applicant on the Wales Kidney Research Unit, funded by Health and Care Research Wales (£2.984M), which is delivering an All-Wales strategy for the study of diagnosis, prevention, treatment and social context of kidney disease. I co-lead the Association of Nephrology Nurses Research Community of Practice. In 2024 I became the Associate Editor of the Journal of Renal Care.

My RCBC-funded PhD was an ethnography exploring patients’ and families’ experiences of living with peritoneal dialysis (Baillie et al. 2012, Baillie and Lankshear 2014, Baillie and Lankshear 2015, Baillie 2018). Subsequently, my Postdoctoral Fellowship was a mixed methods study examining patients’ and families’ knowledge and experiences of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (Baillie et al. 2018Baillie et al. 2021, Baillie et al. 2023). Recently, I collaborated with an international panel of kidney nurses to co-develop nursing sensitive indicators for peritoneal dialysis nursing, which have been endorsed by the European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association (Baillie et al. 2025).

Currently, two of my PhD students are undertaking kidney care research studies, exploring haemodialysis and kidney transplant.

Qualitive research

During my career I have contributed to a wider range of research studies utilising qualitative research methods, including palliative care, oncology and public involvement (please see full list of publications). I also supervise empirical qualitative research projects, which to date have encompassed a range of long-term conditions including head injuries, schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis and dementia.

Capacity building

I have a passion for developing research capability and capacity for nursing and allied health professions. As Deputy Lead for RCBC Wales, I have supported a range of professionals through the application and award process to secure research funding, while also contributing to the RCBC Operational Group at a strategic level. Furthermore, I am supervising three RCBC Wales Fellows with pre-doctoral studies exploring organ donation, women’s health and outreach services.

I have been a Postgraduate Research Programme Manager for the School of Healthcare Sciences since 2021, where I support students throughout the doctoral journey, including co-leading an academic development programme.

Research citizenship

I am Vice Chair of the School of Healthcare Sciences Research Ethics Committee, and sit on the University's Open Research Integrity and Ethics Committee. Previously, I was the external member of the School of Medicine Research Ethics Committee. I have experience of chairing and examining Vivas.

Teaching

I teach and assess on preregistration, MSc and doctoral modules, with a particular focus on research methods, research ethics and long-term/ complex conditions. I also supervise students undertaking undergraduate and masters dissertations, and supervise doctoral students. Previously I led an undergraduate complex care module (level 6) and postgraduate research module (level 7).

Between 2017 and 2023 I was a Visiting Lecturer at Freiburg University, Germany, where I taught ethnographic research methdology and methods to postgraduate registered nurses.

I became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2021, having been a Fellow since 2016.

I am an External Examiner at Swansea University and the University of Derby. I have acted as an Evaluator for the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority.

Biography

After completing my Bachelor of Nursing (Hons.), I worked as a staff nurse in Nephrology and Transplant and as a bank nurse at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. In 2009 I secured funding from the Research Capacity Building Collaboration (RCBC) Wales to undertake a full-time PhD studentship at the Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies (awarded 2013). My PhD focused on patients' and families' experiences of using peritoneal dialysis, utilising ethnographic methods.

I joined the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Centre, Cardiff University School of Medicine, in 2012 as a Research Assistant, before working as a Research Associate.  In this role I worked as part of an interdisciplinary research team and contributed to a variety of qualitative and mixed methods studies.

I joined the School of Healthcare Sciences in 2014 as a Lecturer in Adult Nursing. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2021.
