Research

My research interests include:

  • Long term conditions, particularly kidney failure and peritoneal dialysis
  • Patient and family experiences of healthcare
  • Qualitative research methods

In 2015, I was awarded a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from the Research Capacity Building Collaboration (RCBC) Wales. This Fellowship enabled the continuation of my doctoral research, focusing on patients’ and families’ knowledge and experience of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (infection of the peritoneal membrane).

Currently I am working on a project with nursing colleagues from around Europe exploring quality care provided by peritoneal dialysis nurses. We developed the first nursing sensitive indicators for peritoneal dialysis nursing, which have been endorsed by the European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association and are available here.

I am a Postgraduate Research (PGR) Programme Manager within the School of Healthcare Sciences, where I work with the PGR Team to support students throughout their doctoral journeys, from admission to completion. I have experience of chairing and examining Vivas.

I am Vice Chair of the School of Healthcare Sciences Research Ethics Committee, and sit on the University's Open Research Integrity and Ethics Committee. I am Cardiff University Deputy Lead for RCBC Wales.

I am a Collaborator with the Wales Kidney Research Unit.

Teaching

I teach and assess on preregistration, MSc and doctoral modules, with a particular focus on research methods, research ethics and long-term/ complex conditions. I also supervise students undertaking undergraduate and masters dissertations, and supervise doctoral students. Previously I led an undergraduate complex care module (level 6) and postgraduate research module (level 7).

Between 2017 and 2023 I was a Visiting Lecturer at Freiburg University, Germany, where I taught ethnographic research methdology and methods to postgraduate registered nurses.

I became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2021, having been a Fellow since 2016.

I am an External Examiner at Swansea University and the University of Derby. I have acted as an Evaluator for the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority.

Biography

After completing my Bachelor of Nursing (Hons.), I worked as a staff nurse in Nephrology and Transplant and as a bank nurse at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. In 2009 I secured funding from the Research Capacity Building Collaboration (RCBC) Wales to undertake a full-time PhD studentship at the Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies (awarded 2013). My PhD focused on patients' and families' experiences of using peritoneal dialysis, utilising ethnographic methods.

I joined the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Centre, Cardiff University School of Medicine, in 2012 as a Research Assistant, before working as a Research Associate.  In this role I worked as part of an interdisciplinary research team and contributed to a variety of qualitative and mixed methods studies.

I joined the School of Healthcare Sciences in 2014 as a Lecturer in Adult Nursing. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2021.
