Research
My research interests include:
- Long term conditions, particularly kidney failure and peritoneal dialysis
- Palliative care
- Patient and family experiences of healthcare
- Qualitative research methods
In 2015, I was awarded a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from the Research Capacity Building Collaboration (RCBC) Wales. This Fellowship enabled the continuation of my doctoral research, focusing on patients’ and families’ knowledge and experience of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis (infection of the peritoneal membrane).
Currently I am working on a project with colleagues from around Europe exploring quality care provided by peritoneal dialysis nurses.
I am a Postgraduate Research (PGR) Programme Manager within the School of Healthcare Sciences, where I work with the PGR Team to support students throughout their doctoral journeys, from admission to completion. I have experience of chairing and examining Vivas.
I am Vice Chair of the School of Healthcare Sciences Research Ethics Committee and an external member of the Cardiff School of Medicine Research Ethics Committee. I am Cardiff University Deputy Lead for RCBC Wales.
Teaching
I teach and assess on preregistration, MSc and doctoral modules, with a particular focus on research methods, research ethics and long-term/ complex conditions. I am module leader for a post-graduate, level 7 research module. I also supervise students undertaking undergraduate and masters dissertations, and supervise doctoral students.
I am a Visiting Lecturer at Freiburg University, Germany.
I am an External Examiner at Swansea University and the University of Derby.
I became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2021, having been a Fellow since 2016.
Biography
After completing my Bachelor of Nursing (Hons.) I worked as a staff nurse in Nephrology and Transplant and as a bank nurse at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. In 2009 I secured funding from the Research Capacity Building Collaboration (RCBC) Wales to undertake a full-time PhD studentship at the Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies (awarded 2013). My PhD focused on patients' and families' experiences of using peritoneal dialysis, utilising ethnographic methods.
I joined the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Centre, Cardiff University School of Medicine, in 2012 as a Research Assistant, before working as a Research Associate. In this role I worked as part of an interdisciplinary research team and contributed to a variety of qualitative and mixed methods studies.
I joined the School of Healthcare Sciences in 2014 as a Lecturer in Adult Nursing. I became a Senior Lecturer in 2021.
