Overview

I am a Lecturer in German in the School of Modern Languages at Cardiff University, which I joined in 2016. Since then, I have taught German across a range of levels in the Undergraduate programme, the Languages for All programme, and part-time courses for adults. I am responsible for the design, review, delivery, and assessment of language modules in German.

Before coming to Cardiff, I worked as a Lecturer and later as an Assistant Professor (Adjunkt) in the Institute for Germanic Studies and Applied Linguistics at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin (Poland), where I carried out interdisciplinary research on Foraging Language Acquisition, Psycholinguistics, and Language Pedagogy. In 2006, I gained my PhD in Humanities with a specialization in German and Applied Linguistics. In 2009, I published my monograph Der Erwerb syntaktisch-topologischer Regularitäten des Deutschen durch polnische Lerner und seine glottodidaktischen Implikationen, which aims to describe and explicate the acquisition of German syntax and its implications for classroom-based foreign language learning.

I have experience in delivering language pedagogy and training programs for Modern Foreign Language (MFL) teachers. I co-designed the curriculum for the PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages and have taught several modules specifically for teachers of German. With a solid background in foreign language pedagogy, I have led seminars on language pedagogy and psycholinguistics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Additionally, I have supervised bachelor’s dissertations and acted as a peer evaluator for master’s theses in the area of Foreign Language Pedagogy.

I am passionate about learning and teaching languages and confident in applying a variety of teaching techniques and technologies to develop modules, prepare and deliver seminars to students at multiple language proficiency levels. I have extensive experience and a strong track record in delivering online and hybrid seminars, tailored to both synchronous and asynchronous learning formats.

Additionally, I critically explore the application of AI tools in HE and am involved in integrating AI tools to enrich student learning experiences, particularly in seminars. I am committed to professional development in this area to stay at the forefront of innovative teaching practices.

I am a native speaker of Polish and an experienced teacher of Polish as a foreign language.

Research

My research primarily focuses on psycholinguistics and the cognitive processes underlying language acquisition, with a particular emphasis on the development of grammatical competence in learners of a second or foreign language. I aim to describe and explain the fundamental principles of foreign language acquisition to deepen our understanding of how languages are learned. These insights support the development of more effective pedagogical practices and help improve language teaching and learning.

Additionally, I explore how learners’ existing language skills can facilitate the acquisition of new languages, with a particular focus on developing effective language learning strategies (learning to learn languages), as well as on the roles of positive transfer and interference.

Some outcomes of my research I have presented at conferences and in publications, including:

  1. Language Acquisition: Focusing on the development of grammatical competence in learners of German as a second or foreign language.
  2. Psycholinguistics:
    • Exploring the cognitive processes involved in language learning and usage.
    • Investigating how existing language skills impact the acquisition of new languages, including both positive transfer and interference.
  3. Language Pedagogy:
    • Discussing innovative teaching methods and the integration of technology in language education.
    • Researched students’ profiles and language learning biographies to understand factors influencing motivation.
    • Identified effective teaching techniques and personalised strategies to foster and sustain development in language learning.
