I am the School of Medicine Research Infrastructure Oversight Group (RIOG) Academic Lead/Chair and have a wide range of responsibilities whihc extend to key contributions at College and University level. Beyond Cardiff I am the GW4* Research Infrastructure and Sustainability Steering Group (RISSG) Cardiff University Technical Leadership Representative, former Chair and a Founder Member. I have been Central Biotechnology Services (CBS) Operational Director since Dec 2011. CBS (www.cardiff.ac.uk/central-biotechnology-services) is an ISO 9001:2015 certified and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) accredited Cardiff University Core Facility based in the School of Medicine. CBS provides user access and fully managed services for local researchers, colleagues from other not-for-profit organisations (universities and the NHS) and industry. The proven track record in the commercial sector includes start-ups, SMEs and global companies.

Technology areas include flow cytometry, bioimaging, gene expression, bioinformatics and protein analysis. The team of Technology and Quality Management Specialists offers comprehensive services, including advice on experimental design, sample preparation, data analysis and Quality Management Systems. Extensive training is offered to: introduce the various technologies, enable instrument operation (user access) and develop data analysis skills. CBS can also host companies, facilitate academic collaborations/consultancy and arrange access to a wide range of resources at Cardiff University, across Wales and the GW4 Alliance.

Biography

See the Overview section for my current roles.

I was recruited to Cardiff in 2003 and was tasked with achieving funding to establish and lead a new Proteomics Facility. This was successful and, as CBS Proteomics Facility Academic Lead, I was responsible for a wide range of projects in extended collaborations with many Cardiff researchers and external organisations until 2014. I was also the Scientific Director of Ovasort Ltd, who were primarily interested in sperm-based sex-selection for livestock (2005-2009).

I am a former researcher (proteomic and functional characterisation of mammalian sperm cells at fertilization) and was an Associate Editor for two journals: Molecular Human Reproduction (2013-2016) and Reproduction (2013-2023). Before Cardiff I was a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham and Birmingham NHS Assisted Conception Unit (2000-2003) and a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Sheffield (1993-2000). These varied roles also included a wide range of research projects in mammalian reproduction and several years working on commercial projects.

My PhD (1994) on the biochemistry of mammalian glycolipid anchors was conducted as a Research Assistant at the University of Leeds and also involved spending extended time with collaborators at the University of Dundee. Prior to this I was a Research Assistant at the University of York (1989-1990) where I investigated the biochemistry of the Fallopian tube in collaboration with colleagues at Hammersmith Hospital. Lastly, I also studied for my first degree at the University of York and graduated in 1989 with a BSc (Hons) in Biology (Cell Biology and Biochemistry)
