Overview
I am a Reader in Medical Education at Cardiff University School of Medicine and course lead for the intercalated BSc in Medical Education. I am co-chair of Cardiff University Press's Editorial Board and a member of its Monograph Commissioning Panel. I am also Honorary Editor of The British Student Doctor Journal, a diamond open access journal entirely produced by and for medical students. In 2015 I was awarded the President's Silver Medal of the Academy of Medical Educators for outstanding and sustained contributions to medical education.
My professional background is in academic publishing and I was Managing Editor of Medical Education and The Clinical Teacher from 2001 to 2008. I co-ordinated the work of the Expert Advisory Panel on assessment for the Tooke Inquiry into Modernising Medical Careers (2007). I am a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators and was elected Vice Chair of its Council in 2015. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I have been a GMC Education Associate since 2010, and am the author or co-author of >50 peer reviewed publications on medical education, including two books, Medical Education for the Future: Identity, Power and Location and Educators of Healthcare Professionals: Agreeing a Shared Purpose. I am a member of the Association for Medical Humanities, and my interests include educational standards in healthcare, medical humanities, publication ethics and curriculum theory.
