Teams and roles for William Davies

Overview

I am a PhD research student at Cardiff University, researching the impact of electoral systems on voting behaviours, party ideology, and the understanding of politics for the general public. I am currently supervised by Dr Jac Larner, Dr Nye Davies, and Professor Peter Dorey.

My research interests include electoral systems, voting behaviour, mixed-methods research, and comparative politics. I am also interested in political theory, especially critical theory and post-structuralism.

Before coming to Cardiff to complete my MSc in Social Science Research Methods (Politics), I attended Aberystwyth University and studied Law and International Politics (LLB), in which I achieved first-class honours.

Election Systems in Wales: The Impact of Election Reform on Voting Behaviour, Ideology, and Political Understanding

My current project focuses on the question of electoral system reform in Wales, which became a salient issue recently due to the Welsh Government’s program of Senedd reform. Such a significant change to the voting system has not been experienced in Wales since the formation of the Senedd, and so the impacts of electoral reform have not yet been studied. More specifically, I will be looking at the impact electoral reform has on the behaviour of voters (such as strategic voting incentives), the ideological makeup and discourses of political parties, and the way in which voters conceive of their vote on election day.
