Overview
I am an applied social psychologist with a particular interest in stigma, inequality, and discrimination. I'm particularly interested in the social processes that underlie how we decide what constitutes discrimination and what doesn't. Research suggests that this is an intergroup phenomenon.
My research has employed a range of methods through experimental and quantitative surveys, to discourse and dialogical analysis. I remain committed to both quantitative and qualitative methods as and when they are most appropriate to the research question.

Research
I am an applied social psychologist. At the core of my research is an emphasis on applying substantive social psychological theory to the social sciences. I work with theories and methods from social and critical psychology, and then apply them to everyday practice and experience.
These days, most of my work focuses around the practice and experience of 'discrimination'. People who have experienced an event that could be interpreted as discrimination are often remarkably unwilling to describe it as such: they use a whole range of other explanations instead. People who have acted in ways that could be interpreted as discrimination similarly reach for a range of other explanations. My research focuses on the ways that people make these arguments and how this is consequential for social justice: the central argument is that it is relatively difficult to make a successful claim of discrimination, and relatively easy to resist such a claim.
My research has employed a range of designs through experimental and quantitative surveys, to discourse and dialogical analysis. I remain committed to both quantitative and qualitative methods as and when they are most appropriate to the research question.

Supervision
I am interested in supervising PhD students and establishing research collaborations on aspects of stigma, discrimination, and inequality. I am interested in the causes and practices of stigma, but also the lived experiences of people who experience inequality and how they make sense of these experiences. My work draws on both social psychological and sociological theory and includes both quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
