Mr Michael Hackman

Learning Designer

Overview

Role responsibilities

As a Learning Designer in the Digital Education team, I focus on helping academics and professional staff use technology to improve teaching and learning across the university. I develop and lead workshops that combine pedagogy with practicality and deliver the 'Introduction to Teaching' and 'FSHEA' courses.

As a School Partner for ESRC Cymru DTP I am leading on their community initiative for students seeking to reduce the feeling of loneliness amongst their PhD students. This has developed from initially being on Teams into a structured Buddy Scheme that has brought students together based on their Path, their Institute and EDI requirements.

Key work/Specialties

Lead on the creation and development of an Investigative Community Toolkit, Cardiff University. In partnership with Dr Hannah Shaw, we are developing a toolkit for transitioning to the review programme in the middle of a module.

It will offer insight into the design of courses, conferences and workshops to help develop an approach that prioritises the students.

Work in partnership with lecturers to support self-review and develop teaching practice. Help raise awareness of methods for improving and observe lectures to offer guidance and advice especially for specific modules/programmes.

Biography

Ten years' teaching experience in secondary, further and higher education. I started teaching in secondary education introducing Business Studies and Maths to A levels meeting targets of 75%+ of students achieving A* - B.

When I taught Adults in the Community, I developed and delivered accredited and unaccredited courses on IT, Start-up, Personal Finance and Maths skills.

In further education, I lectured on Accounting and Finance across a range of accreditations to Level 5 and was a course leader. During this time I gained Chartered Teacher Status (CTeach), Advanced Teacher Status (ATS) and became a Fellow of the Society for Education and Training (FSET).

Since joining Cardiff University in 2021 I have enjoyed working with lecturers and professional staff to review and develop teaching methods. One of the biggest highlights was presentation and marking on the PGCert Med course.
