Overview

I am a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing and the Lead for Technology and Simulation guiding the School's strategy in this area. I am also an Associate Dean for Clinical Skills and Simulation in Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) (secondment -0.2 FTE since 2020) leading upon the All Wales Simulation-Based Education and Training Strategy -2022-27. I have a clinical background in medical nursing, in particular cardiac and gastroenterology.

I have a special interest and expertise in clinical skills and simulation-based education. I am a strong advocate for interprofessional learning and simulation. I am a member of the scientific committee- https://www.sesam-web.org/scientific-committee/ and education committee of the Society for Simulation in Europe (SESAM).

I teach, assess and supervise across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and supervise postgraduate research students. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). I am also an active member of The Wales Centre For Evidence Based Care: A JBI Centre of Excellence

Research

My research interests are focused upon infection prevention, service and workforce improvement, undergraduate nurse education, public health clinical skills education and simulation-based education.  Specific areas of interest include:

·      Aseptic technique

·      Infection prevention and control

·      Physical activity and Nutrition

·      Mixed methods studies

·      Systematic Reviews

·      Simulation-based education

·      Immersive technologies and Artificial Intelligience

My PhD study (Awarded 2019, Cardiff University) was a mixed methods, sequential explanatory study exploring undergraduate nursing students’ education and training in aseptic technique in the United Kingdom.

I have presented at national and international conferences with regards to clinical skills education, interprofessional simulation, immersive technology in healthcare education and training and simulation-based education.

Teaching

I am an experienced educator and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and mentor for staff on the Cardiff University Education Fellowship Programme. I have led and taught upon post-registration modules and been a Programme manager for the Postgraduate Certificate/MSc in Colposcopy. I now teach, supervise and examine at pre-registration undergraduate, taught postgraduate and doctoral levels.

I teach a range of different subjects: professional skills, reflection, gastroenterology, physical examination skills, research methods and skills, patient-centred care, nutrition, infection prevention, cardiac and medical nursing, simulation-based education and clinical skills.

Learning and Teaching projects

I have led the School’s response as part of the consultation phase of the Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH) simulation standards in 2016. I have subsequently have actively contributed to the consultation and peer process of the revised  ASPiH Standards 2023 in my role as Associate Dean for Clinical Skills and Simulation in Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW).

I have led on the development, implementation and evaluation of an innovative, international simulation resource to prepare first year undergraduate nursing students for placements in the community setting as part of a three year Erasmus funded Innovative Simulation Pedagogy for Academic Development (ISPAD) project (2014-2017). The ISPAD project involved working collaboratively with academics from two international universities (Turku University, Finland and University of Molise, Italy).

Supervisions

I am a PhD supervisor and have supervised post-graduate research students in the areas of:

  • Hand hygiene and infection prevention
  • Simulation-based education
  • Nurse prescribing

I welcome research degree applications from potential students sharing my interests in improving infection prevention practices; simulation-based education; and in the use of immersive technologies or artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare education and training and service provision. I am particularly keen to hear from people aiming to develop their expertise in the use of mixed methods studies or case-studies and can support both qualitative and quantitative investigation.
