Clinical Senior Lecturer
Overview
I am interested in all aspects of research in Older People, my areas of interest are stroke, diabetes and large scale epidemiology, especially biobanking.
I am the course leader for the MSc in Ageing Health and Disease. This course requires wide knowledge of all areas of clinical gerontology. I particularly enjoy supervising the dissertation section.
Vascular disease is close to my heart; my PhD was in diabetes in the older person and I spent a year on sabbatical in Glasgow University, focusing on stroke and hypertension.
I find systematic and Cochrane reviews particularly enjoyable. I am currently working on four systematic reviews in very diverse areas; dance therapy, multitasking, urate and laparoscopic surgery in the elderly. I also enjoy performing Cochrane reviews and I am working on my third one, have completed one in general surgery and one in general medicine.
Surgical disease in the Elderly is another area of interest. The epidemiology of surgical conditions, especially general surgical conditions, is very sparse in the older person. I have recently formed a research development group in this area and we are hoping to start large scale observational data collection and hopefully future RCTs.
My clinical responsibilities are based in Ystrad Mynach Fawr, where I am a general, geriatric and stroke physician. A job I really like doing too!
