He has held the positions of Research Associate with the Wales Institute of Forensic Medicine and Cardiff School of Engineering between 1995 and 1997, University Lecturer at Cardiff University between 1997 and 2011 and Senior Lecturer between 2011 and August 2019. He currently holds the position of Reader in Clinical, Trauma and Orthopaedic Engineering at Cardiff University. In 2017 he was appointed as an Adjunct Faculty Professor of Brain Injury Biomechanics at Mississippi State University, USA and in 2018 became an invited member of the International Brain Mechanics and Trauma Laboratory at the University of Oxford. He is a founding co-editor of the Journal Brain Multyphysics. He has over twenty-years-experience of applying engineering principles to the investigation of the causation of injury. His research interests include the biomechanics of injury of the following types: penetrative wounding and blunt force trauma, falls, playground accidents, sports related head injuries, sub concussive brain injuries, non-accidental injuries; including vehicular impacts, short fall impacts and inertial injuries, such as those believed to be a result of shaking. He has a specialist interest in injuries to infants and children. He has published over 140 peer reviewed national and international journal and conference publications on these subjects and inclusions in the textbooks on the subjects of ‘Brain Biomechanics Multiscale Modeling’, ‘Forensic Neuropathology’ and ‘Paediatric Forensic Medicine and Pathology’. He is a consultant to several UK’s government agencies and routinely advises multi agency investigations on the biomechanical engineering aspects of murder, assault, accident and suicide. He routinely acts as an expert witness in England and Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Internationally on issues related to infant, child and adult injury in criminal. civil and family courts and Courts of Appeal.
