MEDIC HIVE (Hybrid & Interactive Virtual Environments) Digital Medical Education

I am interested in using digital and multimedia approaches to create immersive student learning experiences. As a member of MEDIC's HIVE group, I have worked with colleagues on a number of e-learning projects including:

Ophthalmoscope Oreintation E-Learning Resource (ELR) | 2025 | Explore the Ophthalmoscope Orientation ELR 

I designed a novel ELR to support students learning ophthalmoscopy: the practical technique used to examine the back of the eye with a handheld device (ophthalmoscope). The resource enables students to visualise and familiarise themselves with the appratus, before 'hands-on' clinical practise at their in-person classes.

Stop Motion Animation Immunology Resource | How to train a killer T cell | 2023

I developed a video resource using modelling clay and stop motion techniques to explain T-cell maturation in the human body. This was adopted within the Year 2 Case 16 Module (Cancer and Genetics) to explain how immune cells identify and target cancer cells in a fun way, using animated modelling clay characters competing in a series of games.

Biography

Background

I am a fully qualified medical doctor and Cardiff University School of Medicine graduate. I come from a widening access background and am the first person in my family to study medicine. I began my journey in the School of Medicine as a medical student in 2013, where I was part of the first cohort of students to embark on the 'C21' medical programme, an innovative medical curriculum with a focus on small group teaching and early clinical exposure.

Medical Student

I graduated in 2018 (Emergency and Pre-hospital Care BSc, Hons) and 2019 (Medicine MBBCh, Hons). At the time, I aspired to be an Emergency Medicine Doctor, and had an active role in delivering peer-led teaching for the Pre-Hospital and Emergency Medicine (PEMS) and Wilderness and Expedition Medicine (WEMS) student societies.

Doctor

I completed my clinical training as a Foundation Doctor (F1 and F2) in North Wales. My interests broadened into anaesthesia and near peer teaching. I started a Clinical Fellow post in Peri-operative Care and Medical Education
in the South-West to explore my interests further. 

Educator

During my clinical fellow role, I was eager to pursue my interests in medical education on a full-time basis. I actively transitioned into my current academic role as a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences on the undergraduate medicine programme in 2022. I now have the pleasure of teaching the next generation of doctors on the programme I studied.

The Rhino Elective Prize 'recognises and supports exceptional student elective experiences. The bursary enables medical students to carry out their medical electives and reflects the Society’s close association with the rhinoceros. Prize winners are selected upon a written post-elective report which is shared with the Society to showcase students learning throughout their elective experience.' Prize and Bursary shared with 2 colleagues for our joint medical elective to Eastern Uganda.

Year 1 Student Selected Component (SSC) | Literature Review | Air pollution and health: clean air for all? | 2022 - 2025

We explore the topic of air pollution as one of the greatest environmental threats to human health on an individual and global scale. Students choose to investigate an air pollution related health impact, relevant to their interests, and write a 1500 word literature review on the subject.

The SSC is centred around Ella's Law, the Clean Air (Human Rights) Bill, a real‑world example of the profound human consequences of air‑pollution exposure. Ella Roberta Adoo Kissi-Debrah, aged 9, died from a fatal asthma attack and is the first person worldwide to have air pollution exposure listed as a cause of death on her death certificate.

Engagement

I am an early career female academic and have taken a less-than traditional route into academia.
