Overview
I am a Project Co-ordinator for MFL Mentoring, a government-funded language advocacy programme supporting young people in Wales to engage with international languages. My responsibilities include coordinating the placement of university student mentors in secondary schools around Wales, developing website and social media content, collating and analysing learner data, and contributing to the publication of research.
I hold a PhD in Languages and Translation Studies. My thesis explored the sociology of audiovisual translation, with a particular focus on fansubbing.
I have amassed a range of teaching experiences, primarily as a graduate tutor in French and Spanish language, translation, and culture. I have also been employed as a translation tutor mentoring adult students on an online Translation Studies course, and am currently involved in various scholarship research projects.
I am also a freelance translator, proofreader and editor working with English, French, Spanish and Catalan.
Outside of academia, I am a keen film photographer and have had my work displayed at Swansea's Volcano Theatre, where I was shortlisted for the Likeness portrait exhibition.

Research
My current research is centred around the educational landscape in Wales, focusing particularly on barriers and motivators to learning international languages, and how this varies according to school medium (Welsh, English, or bilingual).
My doctoral research focused on audiovisual translation (AVT), an especially modern and socio-culturally impactful form of translation, and one which merits considerable academic attention given the vast audience that translated audiovisual materials (such as films and television) may reach. I adopted theoretical and methodological frameworks from the field of sociology to the context of AVT in order to elicit a novel understanding of the social forces and power dynamics at play in this contemporarily relevant sub-field of translation. Specifically, I employed methods and theories developed by influential French social anthropologist Pierre Bourdieu (namely his conceptualisations of social practice and the field of cultural production) in order to map out the field of French fansubbing and analyse the motivations of the agents involved: https://orca.cardiff.ac.uk/id/eprint/183785/.
As an educator, I have become highly invested in improving teaching practices and curriculum design, with a particular focus on EDI and digital literacy. I contribute to scholarship research on student perceptions of generative AI in language learning, and am open to involvement in future research that explores the role of AI in higher education.
Beyond my current research, other areas of interest for me include Catalan language and culture (having lived and studied in Barcelona).
Teaching
My primary teaching role is as a graduate tutor on several undergraduate modules on French and Spanish language, translation, and culture (such as Specialised Translation Methods and France in a Transnational Context). I am highly invested in fostering inclusive and dynamic learning experiences for my students.
I have attained my Fellowship and Associate Fellowship from Advance HE (formally the HEA). My portfolios have centred around the themes of EDI, student transitions, and digital literacy. The article attached to my profile expands upon these qualifications.

I have also mentored adult students and presented content on a Translation Studies MOOC (massive online open course) hosted by Cardiff University. This role entailed guiding discussions to facilitate a collaborative and creative learning environment, in which thousands of students from across the globe and from a range of backgrounds worked to co-develop our understanding of translation.
