Research
Research interests
- Evidence synthesis methodologies
- Evidence implementation
- Patient and public involvement and engagement
As a Systematic Reviewer, I work in partnership with clinicians and decision makers conducting a range of evidence reviews. My role involves all aspects of the review process including protocol and question development, designing search strategies, critical appraisal, data extraction, and evidence synthesis.
Working in partnership with the Marie Curie Research Centre, I am involved in the conducting evidence synthesis.
Currently, I am involved in the following rapid reviews:
- A systematic review of the implementation of cancer-specific Holistic Needs Assessment (HNA) in adult clinical practice, and applicability to the brain tumour population.
- Mapping non-verbal methods used to assess and explore grief, mental health and wellbeing with children and people with additional learning or communication needs, a scoping review of the research evidence.
- What does Future Care Planning look like within end-of-life care? A scoping review of the literature.
Additionally, I work on evidence synthesis projects for Health and Care Research Wales Evidence Centre. We conduct reviews of existing evidence to inform policy and practice needs.
Selected grants and funding:
- End of life care for people with severe mental illness: An evidence synthesis (MENLOC study), NIHR Health Services and Delivery Research Programme, 2018, £143,445
- A novel peer-support intervention using Motivational Interviewing for breastfeeding maintenance: A UK feasibility study, NIHR Health Services and Delivery Research Programme, 2014, £293,310.00
- Scoping a National Nutrition Policy for Australia. Subcontractor to: Queensland University of Technology, Grant DOHA, Australia, 2013, £13,355
- Public Health guidance for the oral health of adults in nursing and residential care homes, NICE, 2012, £109,378
Teaching
I lead the Cardiff Systematic Review Course and teach systematic review methodology across a number of postgraduate courses. This includes:
- MSc in Ageing Health and Disease
- MSc in Palliative Medicine
I teach evidence-based methodologies on several internal and external programmes including Cardiff University Doctoral Academy and the Cardiff Researcher programme. I also teach critical appraisal on the Critical Appraisal Training for Child Health (CATCH).
