Overview

My interests are in differential operators and operator pencils, and involve both analysis and computational mathematics. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council have funded my work since 1994. I have also had significant funding from the Leverhulme Trust and the London Mathematical Society, and have supervised two Research Fellows funded by the European Union.

Much of my work concerns models arising in applied mathematics and mathematical physics, including Schroedinger and Maxwell equations. I also work on inverse problems (typically, Calderon-type problems): these involve determining the interior parameters in a physical system by making measurements on an exterior boundary. Mathematically, this means determining differential equations from a knowledge of some (generalised) Dirichlet to Neumann map. 

I am interested in the limits of what computers can actually tell us about the real world, or about our models of it - see, e.g., my 2023 paper on computation of scattering resonances, in Journal of the European Mathematical Society. This work involves different measures of `hardness' for computational problems.

In 2016 I was elected as a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.

I am a member of the London Mathematical Society, the European Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

I am a member of the Editorial Board of the LMS.
