Overview

I am a Senior Research Fellow affiliated with the Wolfson Centre for Young People’s Mental Health and the Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics. I'm funded by a Health and Care Research Wales NIHR Advanced Fellowship. My fellowship project is titled: "Improving knowledge, awareness, and diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in young women".

My research focus is on understanding why females are less likely than males to be diagnosed with ADHD, as well as improving knowledge and timely diagnosis of ADHD in children and young people. I am also interested in the impact of genetic risk factors on child mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions, as well as related population traits. My research bridges the fields of epidemiology, psychiatry, and genomics.

Biography

I have received funding for my research via a Health and Care Research Wales/NIHR Advanced Fellowship, a NARSAD Young Investigator Grant from the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, a Sêr Cymru COFUND award from the Welsh Government/EU, and a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship.

As part of the Wellcome Trust fellowship, I was based at the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research, Broad Institute (Cambridge, USA) and the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institutet (Stockholm, Sweden), in addition to the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics at Cardiff University.

I completed my PhD within the section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics in 2014. The title of my thesis was “Examining the Clinical and Genetic Overlap of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder Traits” and it can be downloaded freely.

Prior to my PhD, I obtained a BSc in Experimental Psychology from the University of Bristol and then worked as a Research Assistant at Cardiff University, collecting data and performing analyses as part of the Study of ADHD, Genes and Environment.
