Overview

I am a lecturer in the Circular Economy, sitting withing Cardiff University's High-Value Manufacturing Research Group. With a background in structural health monitoring, signal processing, and experimental mechanics, my research is focused on the role of condition monitoring as an enabling technology for the circular economy. My academic interests also include designing for circularity, environmental impact measurement, decarbonisation of schools, and sustainable communities.

Outside of my remunerated profession, I am also one of the founding directors of the not-for-profit, Community Interest Company, Repair Cafe Wales. Repair cafes sit in the innermost loop of the circular economy; they are events at which members of the public can have their broken household items fixed for free by volunteers, with the mission of reducing landfill use, sharing skills, and building more resilient communities.

Research

I am currently working with colleagues in Ain Shams University, Egypt, on a British Council funded project titled Condition Monitoring for Sustainable Technologies and Climate Change Mitigation. Through that we are developing educational resources for engineering students on condition monitoring for sustainable technologies; developing a guide which off-grid community projects can use to understand and spec their own renewable energy generation installation; and opening a repair cafe in Cairo. If this sounds interesting to you, please visit our project website here, and get in touch if you'd like to be involved or contribute.

Please get in contact if our areas of interest overlap and you would like to collaborate on research projects in the future.
