Law Tutor
Overview
I am a Law Tutor at Cardiff University, specialising in tort law (with a particular focus on negligence). My teaching is delivered bilingually in English and Welsh, reflecting a commitment to accessible legal education and the development of practical legal reasoning.
My professional background spans over twenty years across the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, legal education and mediation. I hold a degree in Biomedical Science, an MBA (Corporate Social Responsibility), a Postgraduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGCE/PCET Level 7). I am also an Accredited Mediator (CIArb).
My interdisciplinary research examines personal injury redress schemes, sports law and player welfare, with a particular focus on the feasibility of a no-fault personal injury redress scheme for former professional rugby players affected by neurodegenerative conditions. Drawing on legal doctrine, medical evidence and compensation policy, my work explores how redress schemes can provide fair, efficient and sustainable alternatives to traditional negligence litigation.
My wider research interests include tort law, medical law, compensation systems, alternative dispute resolution, and the intersection of law, healthcare and public policy.
Research
My research focuses on the intersection of private law, personal injury redress and sports governance, with a particular interest in neurological injury arising from participation in professional contact sport.
A central area of my work examines the feasibility of modern, independent redress schemes for former professional rugby union and rugby league players affected by neurodegenerative conditions. I explore whether a no-fault model could provide a fair, efficient and sustainable alternative to traditional negligence litigation, while addressing the competing interests of injured players, sporting organisations and other stakeholders.
My research draws on legal doctrine, medical evidence and compensation policy to examine the challenges involved in designing effective redress frameworks, including causation, evidential uncertainty, eligibility, funding, governance, accountability, and the assessment and determination of claims.
More broadly, my research interests encompass sports law, player welfare, personal injury compensation, negligence and alternative dispute resolution, with a particular interest in the development of independent redress mechanisms for complex injury claims.
Teaching
My teaching has primarily focused on private law, particularly tort law and the law of negligence. I also teach related areas, including Healthcare Ethics and Law, Contract Law and Criminal Law. As a PGCE (PCET Level 7) qualified teacher, I aim to create an engaging and supportive learning environment in which students are encouraged to participate confidently and develop as independent learners.
My teaching emphasises a structured, practical approach to legal problem-solving. I encourage students to identify the central legal issues, recognise the decisive points in a case and focus their analysis on the matters most likely to determine the outcome. By developing these skills, I aim to strengthen students’ confidence in legal reasoning and equip them with an analytical framework they can apply across different areas of law and throughout their legal studies.
