Overview
I gained a BA Honours in English at the University of Sussex in the School of Cultural and Community Studies. After completing a PGCE at Brighton University I taught English and Drama with Media Studies in secondary schools in East Sussex. From 2014 – 2019 I was a PhD candidate in Creative and Critical writing at Cardiff University in the School of English, Communication and Philosophy, where I conducted research into the possibility of sexism within the culture of anatomy, while writing a collection of essays inspired by the research of urologist Helen O’Connell. In my thesis, entitled Modest Venus: Experiments in Seeing, I explore links between art and anatomy and the impact of social factors such as taboo on representations of the female body. https://orca.cardiff.ac.uk/id/eprint/156374

Biography
I was born in Kampala, Uganda and grew up there, in Adelaide, Australia and in Swansea, Wales.
At Sussex University, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, 2.1, before gaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at Brighton University, after which I taught English and Drama at secondary schools in East Sussex for five years.
I taught creative writing as part of Cardiff Council's Lifelong Learning provision from 2003 – 2010.
From 2004 – 2019 I was a tutor at Cardiff University's Centre for Lifelong Learning (now the Centre for Continuing and Professional Development) designing and delivering accredited 10-week modules:
- 'Creative Writing at the Museum', based at Amgueddfa Cymru/National Museum Wales Cardiff, where students engaged creatively with exhibitions, objects in galleries, behind the scenes collections and talks by curators.
- 'Writing Cardiff', based at Cardiff Central Library and the Cardiff Story Museum, where students explored writing about place, identity and geographical mobility.
- 'Writing the Body', based in the Anatomy Department, at Cardiff School of Biosciences, where students experimented with writing about anatomical and medical representations of the body (historical and contemporary).
I joined the Department of Creative and Critical Writing in the School of English, Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University in 2014 as a postgraduate student and completed my PhD in 2019.
From 2016 - 2019 as a postgraduate student I taught undergraduate students on two Year One modules: Creative Reading and Creative Writing.
Since completing my PhD and becoming a University Teacher in 2019 I have been teaching a Second Year Creative Writing module: Stories from the Real World: Narrative Nonfiction, while contributing to creative writing modules at undergrduate and postgraduate levels, with lectures and workshops. I supervise Year Three students for their final year Creative Writing Project and MA students for their Creative Writing Portfolios 1 & 2.
