Mr Steven Morris
Managerial, Professional and Specialist Staff
Overview
First class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bath University with 7 years industrial experience prior to taking up employment with Cardiff University in 2001 when I was appointed as a Senior Project Engineer at the Centre for Energy, Waste and Environment (CREWE) within the School of Engineering with the responsibility for establishing and managing industrial collaboration. During this time I managed the School's UKAS-accredited, £100k turnover, Solar Energy Testing Service (SETS) and a 3M EU programme POWERFLAM2, comprising 12 European partners concerned with co-firing coal with biomass and waste products. In 2005 I assisted in the development of a successful £7.9M ERDF bid to establish the Cardiff University Gas Turbine Research Centre (GTRC)and was appointed its manager in 2006.
I managed the installation and commissioning of the GTRC facility, a £7.9M project and once up and running I maintained control of the GTRC finances (Turnover approximately £1M)and responsibility of managing the GTRC personnel and test programmes.
Successfully managed test programmes include:
1. Detailed internal measurements of a Siemens combustor operating at gas turbine relevant condition. ASME turbo expo 2008 conference paper
2. A study into auto-ignition characteristics of hydrocarbon fuels with application to gas turbines. ASME turbo expo 2008 conference paper
3. True surface temperature measurements of a Siemens combustor operating at gas turbine relevant conditions
4. A study into the effect of pressure and temperature on liquid and gaseous burning velocities. AIAA conference paper 2009
5. PDA characterisation of flashing sprays for DNV. 2009
6. PDA characterisation of bio-oil sprays for and Belgian power generator. 2009
7. Analysis of aviation gas turbine particulate emissions measurement techniques for the European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA), 2009-2013. Project acronym SAMPLE.
8. Development of a lean pre-mixed syngas burner as part of an FP7 project managed by the European Turbine Network (ETN), 2010-2013
I assisted in the development of research links with the steel maker TATA and have personally been involved in delivering combustion training courses to 350 TATA Engineers over the last four years. More recently I developed and delivered a one day CPD course for the Intellectual Property Office in the area of Gas Turbine Technology. In addition I run a half day Risk and Hazard demonstration for MEng and MSc students.
I am currently involved with research programmes investigating the use of alternative fuels and the impact of fuel variability in Gas Turbine operation. To facilitate this research I have designed and commissioned a gas mixing facility which will enable up to five gas streams to be blended to the desired concentrations and an oxygen line for oxy-combustion experiments. In addition, I assisted in the design of a new generic burner with optical access for flame visualisation and non-intrusive measurements.
Energy and Environment
I currently sit on the School of Engineering Safety Committee.
In 2015 I was recognised with an Outstanding Contribution Award.
